How To Pick The Right Length Kayak Paddle?

The two most important factors in choosing the right size of kayak paddle are your kayak’s width and your own height. To determine the right length, hold your arms out, bend your elbows at right angles in normal paddling posture, and grasp the paddle as you would normally. Your hands should be about 23 of the length of the paddle.

To find your ideal kayak paddle length, consider your height, kayak width, sitting position, and paddling style. Wide boats tend to be Sit on Tops, inflatables, fishing vessels, 2 person kayaks, and recreational kayaks. Narrower boats tend to be sea kayaks or surf skis.

To measure a perfect fit, hold the paddle with your elbows bent at 90° and your hands should be about one hands width from where each blade begins. For creek boating or general river running, go longer and get a paddle at least 196cm. The extra length will provide more leverage and bracing for rolling.

The width of your boat is the primary factor when determining the right kayak paddle length. If you are under six feet tall, your paddle length should be 210cm in a sea kayak.

A kayak paddle size chart can help you find a recommended length based on your height and boat width. Once you have more paddling experience, round your height to the nearest inch and compare it to the width of your kayak to find the correct corresponding measurement.
