In-Flight Insider’s Founder and CEO, Carolyn Paddock, offers tips on packing for a cruise. She advises men to bring a dinner jacket, slacks, or dark suit and a pair of shoes, while women may want an evening gown or cocktail dress. Packing for a cruise is an art, but with practice and forethought, one can master the art of packing for a long cruise.
A cruise packing list should account for cruise line dress codes for daywear and evening wear, various activities on board and in port, and the gear needed for travel. With careful planning and purposeful packing, one can successfully cruise without needing checked baggage.
To pack for a cruise, place pants on the bottom of the suitcase long way with the waist at the top, letting excess hang out. Layer in opposite directions until all in. Put shirts in the same way. When checking in, give your clothes to your room steward or ask for a bag from them if there is no bag. Keep your suit in a dry-cleaning bag or tissue paper between folds to prevent wrinkles.
Pack shoes that can serve multiple purposes, such as sneakers that go from formal to semi-formal dining nights. Limit your clothes to a few pairs of shorts, shirts, and nice outfits for formal or semi-formal dining nights. Choose walking shoes that are comfortable and won’t let you down during your cruise.
