How To Make Your Outrigger Canoe Lighter?

Outriggers are essential attachments for canoes, helping to stabilize the vessel during fishing or trolling. They act as an extension to the width of the vessel and require proper paddling technique to maximize efficiency and maneuverability. To build your own outrigger, start by finding two long, straight branches that are about the same thickness. Measure and cut PVC pipe, drill holes on each end, and adjust the height of the float to only touch down on water when secondary stability is needed.

Outrigger canoes can be made using wood or PVC pipes, roam rollers, liter coke bottle, and bicycle inner tubes to secure to thwarts. Adjust the height of the float so that it only touches down on water when secondary stability is needed situationally.

Canoe builder Mike Giblin, founder of Ozone, began creating canoe designs in 1990 from his passion in paddling. He plans to build 3 to 4 long foam floats and have a conduit run through the float and tee up and out the top and bend toward the canoe on each side. Create a quick bolt latch or strap to attach the outrigger for fishing or hunting with kids involved.

You can use stamped C-clamps, drill through them, bolt the arms of the outrigger to, clamp it onto the side like rodholders, or attach the 2 arms to a flat board and clamp it to the side. Add X-bracing to stiffen it.

Outrigger shaping involves cutting and sanding the outrigger foam, then covering it with fiberglass and epoxy. The outrigger foam is mostly straight-ish and can be used for various activities such as fishing, hunting, and fishing.

Are fiberglass canoes heavy?

Lightweight. Fiberglass material canoes are some of the lightest canoes on the market, making them easier to transport and carry from A to B. If you think you’ll struggle to load your canoe or carry it down to the water, then a fiberglass composite canoe will be a better option for you as they’re lighter than aluminum canoes.

Durable. Fiberglass canoes are extremely durable, and you’ll also find that other watercraft are made from the same fiberglass cloth material that makes up the canoe construction. The fiberglass canoe materials, resin, and fiberglass fibers are molded together and left to harden before being coated in a smooth gel. The gel coating is what makes fiberglass canoes durable and resistant to scrapes, scratches, and dents.

For the highest quality fiberglass canoe, ensure that the company has used expensive fiberglass cloth as opposed to chopped pieces of fiberglass as chopped fiberglass lessens the boat’s quality and durability.

Can you be too heavy for a canoe?

Weight Limit. While a canoe has a maximum load capacity of 450 kg, in practice this doesn’t mean that if there are two paddlers, you simply divide this capacity by two.

As a general rule, the maximum weight of a single paddler in one of our canoes is 18½ stone / 120 kg.

Weight Distribution. Another practical consideration is the difference in weight between the front and back seat of the canoe. If in the back seat (the heaviest paddler is always at the back) is, say, a parent who weighs 110 kg, it would not be wise for them to come just with their 10-year-old weighing only 32 kg. In this case, what we would advise is to persuade another adult to accompany you and then the two adults can sit front and back and the child can go in the middle.

Is outrigger canoe safe?

Paddling in an outrigger canoe is a dangerous recreational activity which involves a number of significant risks of physical harm.

Outrigging is a water sport, hence there is every chance that you WILL get wet. Be aware of your own limitations and don’t attempt to do anything on the water that could place you or any other crew member in danger.

  • Be aware of the water conditions – Newcastle Harbour is fed by the ocean and the Hunter River, so water conditions can vary considerably even within the Harbour.
  • After periods of rain (either in the City or further inland) debris of all sizes can be found floating in the Harbour – this can impact ALL watercraft on the Harbour.
  • Newcastle can be affected by those pesty East Coast Lows, so wind is another thing to take into consideration (AOCRA forbids the use of outriggers in areas where Gale Force wind warnings are in place).
  • It is a salt water environment, and we all know what lives in the ocean. Stockton Bight is rumored to be a great breeding ground not only for prawns, but lot bigger creatures with lot bigger teeth.

So keep your eyes open, listen to the steerers/coaching staff and be aware of others – we all want to enjoy the sport.

Can a heavier person sit in front of a canoe?

To avoid this issue, try to balance the weight evenly in the canoe and keep a low center mass. Don’t try to stand up in the canoe while out on the water. If you must move around in the canoe, stay low and concentrate on balancing the weight with those around you. If you are alone in the canoe, sit in the middle. If there are two people in the canoe, have one sit in the back and one sit in the front, with the heavier person or more experienced paddler in the rear of the boat, called the stern. When paddling, try to stay over the centerline of the canoe and keep your back straight. If you are leaning over, make sure that all of the people in the canoe are not leaning over to look at the same place and at the same time. It can be exciting to look at something in the water next to you, such as a fish, but if everyone leans over too far to look, you might just end up joining the fish in the water!

If the body of water you are gliding on has a current, such as a river or creek, it is much easier to paddle in the direction of the water flow than to fight the current going the opposite way. The water will also push you in the direction of the current so you will get to your downriver destination faster.

If you do find the need to go upriver against the current, pick your route carefully. Look for areas where the water is calmer and there are few rapids, rocks, or tree snags. You will need to expend a lot more energy to paddle upriver, so communicate with your team to make sure you are paddling as efficiently as possible. In life, going with the flow is often the same… it is usually easier to do something the way it has been done before than to change it.

Are outrigger canoes fast?

Unlike a single-hulled vessel, an outrigger or double-hull vessel generates stability as a result of the distance between its hulls rather than due to the shape of each individual hull. As such, the hulls of outrigger or double-hull boats are typically longer, narrower and more hydrodynamically efficient than those of single-hull vessels. Compared to other types of canoes, smaller outrigger canoes can be quite fast, yet are also capable of being paddled and sailed in rougher water. This paddling technique, however, differs greatly from kayaking or rowing. The paddle, or blade, used by the paddler is single sided, with either a straight or a double-bend shaft.

These vessels were the first true ocean-going ships, and are an important part of the Austronesian heritage. They were the vessels that enabled the Austronesian expansion from Taiwan into the islands of both the Indian and Pacific Ocean from around 3000 BC. They comprise the bulk of traditional boats in Island Southeast Asia, Island Melanesia, Micronesia, Polynesia, and Madagascar. They have spread to other cultures Austronesians came into contact with, notably in Sri Lanka and southern India as well as in the coast of East Africa. In modern times, outrigger vessels are used in the sport of sailing. Catamaran and trimaran configurations are also widely used for high speed craft.

Outrigger boats were originally developed by the Austronesian-speaking peoples of the islands of Southeast Asia for sea travel. It is believed that the use of outriggers may have been initially caused by the need for stability on small watercraft after the invention of crab claw sails some time around 1500 BCE.

Throughout French Polynesia you will often hear the word ‘Mana’ used. Mana, is sometimes misunderstood, but in essence mana is ‘energy’ not strictly ‘life force’ as we sometimes hear it being defined as. Mana exists in all living things and can equally be considered to exists in rocks, stones and even the largest living mass on our planet, the ocean itself.

With this concept in mind, consider then the notion that a Tahitian will tell you, they can extract this ‘mana’, feed upon it, simply by placing their paddle in the ocean. Polynesians have for thousands of years used this mana to their advantage.
