Through perusal this I was able to run a line from my office to my garage where I put the 2nd router which I plugged a NanoBeam ac into and installed a NanoBeam on my barn across the property and hooked up a third router to so now I have full speed internet in my barn where I work on so many things.   • Nice one – done this myself a few times in the past with old routers to re-use as APs after a colleague told me about it. Bit hit and miss with some of them (BT Homehub 4 needs resetting periodically) but with the benefits of wider WiFi coverage for little cost bar electric, it makes sense. The fiber optic installer located the new router closer to the shop but the signal still isn’t very good. I thought that I could do what you are describing, but didn’t know how. and everyone I talked to just said “Go buy a repeater/extender.” I will try this method first, as my needs in shop aren’t as rigorous as in the house. If the results aren’t acceptable, I’ll use your other method, and need to buy a fairly long ethernet cord, and snake it around the room to the second router location, which is at a window twelve feet from the shop.

  • Considering that when using the old router as a wifi extender you will want it to be located some distance from the main router, it will generally not be feasible to connect the two routers by a cable. Your article would be much more useful (to me) if you showed how to make the connection between the two routers wirelessly.

  • Howdy. Nice. In my old TP-Link also the WAN needed to be reconfigured. I simply assigned a bogus static IP to the WAN and also configured the WAN subnet to cover the WAN bogus IP and as little as possible more. If this was not done the TP_Link would halt all traffic waiting for the ISP IP assignment. In short. 1. The WAN. Disable DHCP. Assign a bogus IP and a subnet to cover it. 2. The LAN. Assign the IP to another static value than the main router within the subnet. Should be good to go. Regards.

Question: Other tutorials suggest changing the “mode” from “Gateway” to “Router”, and apparently the “mode” can sometimes be labeled “NAT” in the interface. So they suggest disabling NAT.   • (1:07 – 1:33) Isn’t it counter-intuitive to feed the router’s/modem’s cable into a LAN port? By the way, I have a ‘new’ router and an ‘old’ router. I use them both as access points behind my ISP’s router (a modem-router combo). My ‘new’ router gets fed the cable into its WAN port. My ‘old’ router gets fed the cable into its LAN port (at first, I fed it into the WAN port, but it lost its connection after I connected a 3rd computer via ethernet).

  • If your unable to go back to the setup page after changing the DHCP just reset your router (by pressing the reset button for 30 seconds) and start by changing the wireless settings @8:04 (you don’t really need to change the IP because it does this automatically (try this if you have the same problem) 😉

I was just confused a bit – are you changing the IP information for the “old” router or the “base” router? Do I need to know the IP address of the first/base router? My landlord’s ethernet cable that runs through the wall becomes weaker but his WiFi is fine, which doesn’t reach to our place. I’d like to follow your tutorial, however he recently upgraded his router to the Comcast xFi Advanced Gateway. The connections ports look different and I’m not sure which one is which. Does it work different with the xFi Advanced Gateway ? I can’t even find a manual online for it.

  • Thank you for this tutorial. I have a question, so I did the same but with two TP-Link routers. When I wanted to give the same SSID and password as in the main router, I could not connect to the other one. Only after I set a new network name and password and chose the WDS option in the devices, I was able to connect and the range is great, but am I somehow lossy (apart from the fact that the household members have to connect to the other network)? I will add that in the second router on the Wireless settings tab, I can fill in two fields: Wireless Network Name and SSID (to be bridged). In the first one I have to enter the name of the new network and in the second my main network, then in the main router the other way round: Wireless Network Name I enter the name of the network which is to have the enhanced signal and as SSID (to be bridged) the name of my main network. Is this correct?
