This article provides a step-by-step guide on creating a custom canoe seat, which can greatly improve comfort and efficiency during long trips. The total cost for this project was just under $3,000.

Whether you’re a professional carpenter or a beginner DIY enthusiast, this guide will provide the right materials, measurements, and instructions to make your own webbed canoe seat. The final dimensions are about 13 wide and 9 deep. To make cane-woven DIY canoe seats, follow the steps provided in the video.

Installing new canoe seats is a 30- to 40-minute modification, and paddlers may opt to replace seats due to wear or rot or simply for something more comfortable for long days. Convex seats are a great option for providing support for the back and bottom, making long canoe trips more enjoyable. Gunnels on each side carry the rod axle just behind the seat, and if desired, detaches for a lightweight option.

To make seats as wide as possible, take the width at the seat location and allow approximately 3 at each side for the connection (hang or cleats). These are great and strap securely to a flat seat, allowing for full recline and good stretch during long paddles. To make things easier, replace the old seat with a more comfortable DIY version with a backrest and some padding.

  • Clean old cane and spline out of seat carefully.
  • Place cane and spline in water to soak. Cane needs to soak for only a couple of minutes, spline should continue soaking while the cane is being put in place.
  • Place the block of wood in the center of the seat. It should fill most of the hole and will hold your cane up in place while it is being installed.
  • Place cane over block centering it on the seat. The cane may need to be trimmed to fit. If there is too much overhang it will not all fit neatly down into the groove.
  • With a blunt instrument, tap in the corners of the cane. This should be done in 8 places.
  • Tap in the cane along the long sides first, working a few inches on one side and then a few on the opposite side alternately until finished.
  • Now that the cane is in place, fill the groove 1 /3 full of glue. Put the spline in the groove and tap it gently with a mallet or you may use a hammer and a block of wood. Do not hit the spline directly, as it will make dents and gouges.

Where should the heaviest person sit in a canoe?

To avoid this issue, try to balance the weight evenly in the canoe and keep a low center mass. Don’t try to stand up in the canoe while out on the water. If you must move around in the canoe, stay low and concentrate on balancing the weight with those around you. If you are alone in the canoe, sit in the middle. If there are two people in the canoe, have one sit in the back and one sit in the front, with the heavier person or more experienced paddler in the rear of the boat, called the stern. When paddling, try to stay over the centerline of the canoe and keep your back straight. If you are leaning over, make sure that all of the people in the canoe are not leaning over to look at the same place and at the same time. It can be exciting to look at something in the water next to you, such as a fish, but if everyone leans over too far to look, you might just end up joining the fish in the water!

If the body of water you are gliding on has a current, such as a river or creek, it is much easier to paddle in the direction of the water flow than to fight the current going the opposite way. The water will also push you in the direction of the current so you will get to your downriver destination faster.

If you do find the need to go upriver against the current, pick your route carefully. Look for areas where the water is calmer and there are few rapids, rocks, or tree snags. You will need to expend a lot more energy to paddle upriver, so communicate with your team to make sure you are paddling as efficiently as possible. In life, going with the flow is often the same… it is usually easier to do something the way it has been done before than to change it.

Does polypropylene webbing float?

Polypropylene has become a popular choice for webbing because it is easy to source and is colorfast even when exposed to frequent sunlight. The chemical nature of polypropylene allows the fibers to float on water, making it especially attractive for use on marine supplies. Polypropylene webbing resists degradation from glues and solvents to provide a material that withstands harsh treatment. It is far and away the most common webbing.

Nylon webbing became well known during the 1940s to use on a variety of military goods but is not as long lasting and strong as polypropylene materials. It is also possible to purchase polyester webbing that resists moisture to remain durable in wet conditions. While polyester is less expensive than polypropylene, it is not as durable and does not have the same type of properties such as floating on water. Webbing made of polyester fiber will not absorb water but withstands high temperatures while remaining soft and pliable.

For hook and loop applications, webbing is most commonly used to reinforce straps. Sewn straps are used in a variety of industries where the environments may be intense and the application is rugged such as in K9 unit training and building antennae rigs. It is also used on clothing designed for the disabled or on lightweight medical braces.

Can you put seats in a canoe?

Introduction: Adding an Extra Seat to a Canoe. I have a couple of canoes. One was a solo canoe, with one seat. You could take an extra person in it but they had to sit on the floor. I have a bigger canoe that had two seats. I added an extra seat to make it a three seater. I only had to drill two new holes in the gunnels. In this Instructable I will show you how easy it was to add an extra seat to a canoe.

A Philipps screwdriver and a proper size wrench to fit the nut.

Can you sand cane webbing?

How To:. Step 1:. Even though this side table looked dark and dreary, it was solid and no repairs were needed. I started by giving this piece a good cleaning withthis White Lightning Cleaner. Then I gave it an overall scuff sanding with 120 grit sandpaper on my orbital sander. For the cane webbing, I used a220 sanding spongeand gave it a light once over. Even thoughcane webbing is extremely durable, you don’t want to use an aggressive sander on it.

Step 2:. The quickest and easiest way to paint cane webbing is to use Silk All-In-One Mineral Paint and to spray it on. This will save you so much time and give you REALLY nice results. If you thin out Silk, it is only recommend using water of no more than 8 ounces per gallon. I usedthis Sand Castle Silk All-In-One Mineral Paint on the cane webbing. Another tip when painting cane webbing is to flip it over so you get full coverage on BOTH sides. The webbing has so many nooks and crannies and you don’t want to miss any spots.

Step 3:. I masked off the natural painted cane withpainters tape and newspaper. Then, I sprayed the wood sections with this Black Sands All-In-One Mineral Paint. It is self-leveling so if you don’t have a sprayer this paint will still give you a super smooth finish. As a bonus, it also has a built-in topcoat!

What are the disadvantages of nylon webbing?

When comparing polyester and nylon webbing of the same type, polyester webbing generally has a lower breaking point. On the other hand, nylon webbing exhibits reduced strength when wet and tends to stretch under damp or wet conditions.

In contrast, polyester webbing remains strong even when wet, retaining its robust qualities. Polyester, nylon, and polypropylene are all highly resilient materials used in webbing. Nylon webbing, in particular, stands out for its exceptional durability and strength. It is frequently employed in the production of dog leashes, safety belts, luggage straps, and various sporting goods. Polypropylene and polyester webbing share similarities with nylon, but they are notably lighter and more cost-effective.

The reduced weight of these materials makes them easier to sew. Polypropylene and polyester webbing are commonly found in dog leashes, backpacks, and handbags.

How high should a canoe seat be?

Your seat should be high enough that you can get your feet under them if you are kneeling. There are times in heavy waves that kneeling will lower the center of gravity to the point where you can prevent capsizing.

Most seats are usually around 10″ at the top of the seat from the bottom of the canoe. I’ve placed hundreds of seats in canoes over my years.Tom.

Thank you all for the thoughts and good ideas! I knew this group would come through for me.

I understand completely the stability factor and respect this first. I have always owned a cushion, used it as a pillow in tent, had it ready for a throw device for floatation if someone needed it overboard etc., but I have never sat on it in the canoe. This might be a test method before I lay the cash down but I will cross that bridge when I get there on the test “drive”.
