How To Load A Kayak On A Car Alone?

Loading a kayak onto a car roof can be challenging, especially for solo kayakers who lack height or muscle strength. However, with the right tools and techniques, it is possible to safely transport a kayak on your car. This involves careful consideration of the best methods and accessories, such as roof racks, truck beds, and trailers.

To load a kayak onto your car by yourself, place a towel or blanket on the rear of your vehicle to prevent scratches. Lift the bow of the kayak and set it down on the towel or blanket at the back of your car. Lift up the stern and carefully slide the kayak onto the roof rack.

If you don’t have a roof rack, it is still possible to transport a kayak on the roof of your car. However, you will likely need some type of padding to protect both the roof of your vehicle and the hull of your kayak.

To load the boat onto your car by yourself, stand behind the car and rest the bow of the kayak on the rear car rack bar or roofroof. Move to the backstern of the kayak (hold onto it!), then lift the stern and slide the entire kayak forward onto the rack. This same method can work from the side of your car.

For a low-tech, low-cost solution, try placing a towel or blanket on top of the rear of your vehicle and then setting the bow of the kayak down. Slide the kayak up onto your thighs while keeping your knees bent. Lift one knee up to support the boat, then lift the kayak over your head and place it on the roof rack.

Can you put a canoe on a car without a roof rack?

If your vehicle doesn’t have a roof rack, you can still transport a canoe safely. You can buy foam blocks specifically designed for this purpose, so your vehicle’s roof doesn’t get scratched. If you don’t want to invest in those, pool noodles can work, too.

With the foam blocks, fit them onto the canoe’s gunnels before lifting it to the vehicle’s roof. Pool noodles are trickier—you’ll want another person to help you out.

Once the canoe is safely on top of your vehicle, you’ll need to run the cam straps or rope all the way through your vehicle’s windows or doors to get a secure fit. (Be careful of the weather stripping as you do that.) With flat cam straps, your doors or windows should be able to close firmly without a problem.

Then tie down the bow and stern for extra security if you’re traveling more than a few miles.

Some students may want to continue on to the intermediate rolling course, or take another session to continue learning with an instructor. Either way, be patient and know that learning happens at a variety of paces. Don’t put too much pressure on yourself, or frustration will set in. Just keep trying, keep your head down, and one day you will succeed.

Can you load a kayak on a car?

Foam Blocks: A Budget-Friendly Alternative. One inexpensive way to transport a kayak with a small car is to use foam blocks. You can quickly and easily place these lightweight and durable foam pads between your kayak and the roof of your small car. Just strap your kayak down with heavy-duty cam straps or rope, and don’t forget to secure the bow and stern lines for added safety!

Make sure to evenly distribute the kayak’s weight on your car’s roof. While this method is budget-friendly, repeated use may not deliver the same level of security as a dedicated roof rack system. If foam blocks and roof top are not completely cleaned of grit scratches can occur and the repeated use of foam blocks can cause wear on the clear coat or paint of your car.

Inflatable Kayaks: Pack Light, Paddle Big. Inflatable kayaks have come a long way in terms of quality, durability, and performance. You can transport your inflatable kayak inside the trunk of your small car, thanks to the convenience of being able to pack your kayak into a compact carrying bag.

This portable option eliminates the need for external carrying solutions and ensures your kayak stays safe from possible damage during transit. Modern inflatable kayaks deliver excellent stability, maneuverability, and comfort, making them suitable for various paddling conditions. Performance of inflatable kayaks do not match that of hardshell boats. Loading inflatable kayaks after a day of paddling can bring water and other contaminants into your vehicle.

A reliable kayak roll is an important safety skill for both sea kayakers and whitewater kayakers. Students should have previous experience with hip snaps and bracing, and performing a wet exit with a spray skirt on.

Anyone can learn how to roll, although everyone has a different learning curve. Some may learn a roll in their first class; others may take more time and practice. Rolling a kayak is all about correct technique, and requires more flexibility and agility than strength. Rutabaga’s instructors will adapt to your needs – we’ll demonstrate alternative techniques and teach a number of take-away exercises and drills for self-practice so you can continue learning and honing your technique on your own.
