Two-person lifts and carries are commonly used to carry boats short distances or to lift them up onto roof-top car racks. One basic underhand lift involves standing on the opposite side and opposite end of the canoe from your partner. Grab the closest support.
Loading a canoe by yourself can be awkward and difficult, but with practice and some tips, it can be easy. Stand between a canoe and your vehicle, perform a solo canoe lift from near the bow seat to lift the bow in the air while keeping the stern on the ground. Swing the bow over your vehicle and place it on the roof rack.
The best way to lift a canoe for transport is to have two people lift it up from one end (while the other end stays on the ground). One person holds the end up high while the other person walks to the yoke.
To load a canoe by yourself on top of a car or van, follow these steps:
1. Lift the canoe onto the rack.
2. Protect the gunwales.
3. Balance the canoe.
4. Toss cam straps over the top.
5. Wrap the straps and toss back.
6. Wrap and buckle the straps.
7. Place the nose on the rear of the van.
8. Stand behind the tail, lift the tail, and push.
9. Lift the back third of your canoe onto wheels and strap it in.
10. Approach the vehicle from that side at a 90 degree angle and place just the front of the canoe on the bar. Grab the back of the canoe and lift it.
