How To Keep Your Phone Safe When Visiting China?

When traveling to China, it is essential to set up your device and secure your network using only secure wireless networks. Physically protect your phone and be wary of scams. Review travel policies, stay alert, and use a proxy server to protect your data from cybercriminal activities.

When traveling to China, your data will be encrypted at the point of transmission and protected from eavesdropping and MitM attacks. Install firewall and antivirus software to protect your data from cybercriminal activities. Use a throwaway, pre-paid cellphone instead of a regular one to avoid downloading spyware and taking it back home.

For those traveling with a rented device or SIM, the best solution is to travel with a rented device or SIM. To protect your privacy, leave your regular laptop, phone, and tablet at home, limit the data you take overseas, keep devices within arm’s length, and avoid using public charging outlets.

To secure your devices before traveling to China, check your cell phone’s compatibility, ask your home network carrier, check if your cell phone is “carrier-unlocked”, have a VPN, and consider using a VPN. If you insist on using your phone, ensure it is “unlocked” to place a China Mobile or China Telecom SIMM in.

If you want to avoid being geographically tracked or having confidential conversations, remove cell phone batteries and any/all CDs. To prepare your laptop, strip unneeded data from your devices before travel, use a throwaway, pre-paid cellphone, and use a VPN.

There are three options for protecting your phone and personal data when traveling to China: international roaming in China, purchasing a Chinese eSIM or SIM Card, or renting a phone.
