Before taking on the wake, practice turning from side to side inside the wake to get used to maneuvering your skis and transferring body weight around. Start in the center of the wake and initiate a right turn. This article provides essential techniques and strategies for crossing the wake, including weight transfer, keeping both skis together, and maintaining speed.
To cross the wake on water skis, stay relaxed, bend your knees, and absorb the hit of the wake under your skis to avoid getting shot up into the air. In Water Ski Jumping, two large, specialized skis are worn to go over a giant orange ramp on the water while being towed by a boat. Three attempts are given to jump as far as possible through the air, landing back on the boat.
After practicing with proper positioning behind the boat, try crossing the wake from behind the boat to the outside. Start in the relaxed knees and apply pressure to the left ski and pull through the wakes across the course and up alongside the boat. When you have achieved your desired height and agility, perform wake jumps.
Begin by edging (toeside or heelside) to build speed. Face the desired direction and allow the rope to guide. Turn to the right and cross the wakes with lots of speed to get up parallel to the boat, 90 degrees to the driver’s right side.
Landing your first wake to wake jump can seem difficult, but it is important to practice good body position, knees bent, hips to handle with a solid core, and work on both sides until you feel comfortable.
