To fit a canoe airbag, first determine the size of the airbag you need. Find the right location for the airbag and inflate it using a foot or hand pump or compressor. Secure the airbag in place using pre-installed webbing loops and buckles. Test the airbag regularly to ensure it is the correct size for your canoe.
Place the airbag at the front end just behind the bow seat, ensuring it sits snugly against the sides of the canoe and has no gaps between the airbag and the sides. For buoyancy blocks or bags, use an electric pump or blow them up with a nozzle for a light-headed feeling.
Finally, finish off the canoe by fitting air bags and anchor straps. Attach laceing, kneeling thwart, end loops, and airbags to the canoe. Use tools like -50mm masking tape, tape measure, pencil, and D-rings for extra security.

With no added buoyancy, if the crack in your boat is large enough, the distance to shore is great enough, or conditions are gnarly enough, you may have to abandon your kayak. And you may not be able to retrieve it again. Ever. From that perspective, a set of float bags is very inexpensive insurance indeed.

Sculling Brace This brace is done by sweeping the paddle across the surface of the water, with a slight upward pitch on the blade. This motion provides an extended outrigger for supporting the canoe through the body and preventing the canoe from rolling or tipping to the paddling side.
When paddling stability primarily comes from the shape of the boat, body position in the boat (e.g J leans), low centre of gravity, and keeping the boat in motion (just paddling). There are times when you may want to provide a bit of extra support – when people are getting in/out, launching, rescues, moving around the boat. There are two methods that I use to provide just a bit of extra stability – Sculling Brace, and a Dropped Skeg.
Sculling Brace. This brace is done by sweeping the paddle across the surface of the water, with a slight upward pitch on the blade. This motion provides an extended outrigger for supporting the canoe through the body and preventing the canoe from rolling or tipping to the paddling side. Choking up on the paddle allows more extension and better support. The paddle is extended over the water with the grip hand fingers under the grip, and the shaft hand on top. Although the strongest brace is when the paddle is almost parallel to the water surface, this is not usually necessary until more support is required.
The support is on the paddling side so in a tandem boat you may want to augment this brace with a dropped skeg or low brace on the other side.
How to make a canoe more buoyant?
Whitewater paddlers and those on salt water usually choose to install float bags for additional flotation. Air bags displace water, which means a capsized canoe floats higher in the water, making rescue easier. Additional flotation in whitewater also reduces the likelihood of the canoe getting pinned, since it floats higher over rocks. It should be noted that air bags cannot prevent water from entering a canoe, but they do minimize the amount of water that can fill it.
We’re often asked how much additional flotation to install. If you don’t need space for gear, the answer is easy – as much as possible. In fact, whitewater playboaters not only install air bags, but often fill much of the cockpit area with closed cell foam, minimizing the amount of water that can enter the canoe. For touring canoes paddled in whitewater or on the ocean, air bags offer plenty of flotation. If room for equipment is paramount, even a small amount of additional flotation is beneficial – air bags don’t need to be fully inflated to increase safety. It’s best to have flotation in both ends.
And a final piece of advice, when capsized, no one ever wishes they had installed less flotation.
