A yacht is a private pleasure ship of at least 33 feet, typically considered in the 35-40-foot range. YachtWorld generally considers anything in this range a yacht. Paolo Moretti of the Italian classification society RINA discusses the definitions, certifications, and rules that apply to large pleasure yachts. The initial process of classification involves assessments of drawing-board designs and attendance during construction or conversion. Once confirmed, a survey confirms that the yacht meets certain criteria and classifications.
Class surveyors are often empowered by the state to inspect and certify crew accommodation, safety equipment, safety radio requirements, and navigation safety. Owners moving from smaller yachts into those over 80 feet will quickly learn the alphabet of ABS, DNV, BV, LR, RINA, and more. These organizations establish standards for the structural strength of the yacht’s hull, suitability of the propulsion, and other built-in features.
A yacht is classified as either a sailing yacht, motor yacht, or gulet yacht, and then as a sports or luxury yacht. Yachts are generally classified by size and several other characteristics, but it is important to note that the language around boats and yachts is not solely based on size. Since 1998, CE certification is required for all recreational boats entering or being sold in Europe, obliging boat manufacturers to respect the classification.
The line that distinguishes a boat from a yacht is not solely drawn by the length of the vessel’s hull cutting through the water, although size certainly plays a role.
