How Tall Is O’Neal Cruise?

Oneil Cruz, born in Nizao, Dominican Republic in 1998, is an unusually tall shortstop with a height of 6 feet 7 inches (2.01 meters) and 215 pounds (98 kg). He is the tallest shortstop to ever make an MLB appearance, along with Joel Guzman, who appeared in only a few innings for the Tampa Bay Rays in 2007. Cruz is the second tallest (6 feet 6 inches) shortstop in baseball history and stands at 6-7, the same listed height as Yankees Aaron Judge. Cruz is three inches taller than Seager and Tatis.

Cruz is a tall hitter, so his pitch height is especially low for him. It is one thing for the 5-foot-6 Altuve to homer off a low pitch; it’s another for the 6-foot-7 Cruz to do it. The pitch HTWT: 6-7, 220 lbs. Cruz has played for the Pittsburgh Pirates and has experienced three bats throws: L, R. Since 1980, only six hitters 6-foot-6 or taller have had sustained success, so betting against Cruz has its merits.

Shakille ONeal, standing at an impressive 71 (2.16 meters), is one of the tallest players in NBA history. Cruz’s height and experience make him a valuable asset to the Pittsburgh Pirates and other major league teams.

Who is the highest paid player on The Pirates?

Mitch Keller, five-year, $77 million extension, 2024. This deal yields the highest average salary the Pirates have ever given a player. In 2023, the right-handed starter was an All-Star, producing a 13-9 record with a 4.21 ERA and 1.245 WHIP.

The Pittsburgh Pirates aren’t known for handing out large multiyear contracts, but they’re starting to reverse that trend. With the recent extension of Mitch Keller, the Pirates have now given lucrative extensions to a key player three years in a row.

The Pirates once had the highest-paid player in the game in Dave Parker, who was given a five-year, $5 million contract in 1979 after winning two consecutive batting titles and a Most Valuable Player Award. At that time, the local steel industry was undergoing a severe downturn. Pittsburgh fans couldn’t relate to a ballplayer making a seven-figure salary. It didn’t help that Parker was a bold, flamboyant Black man who spoke in rhyme like a baseball version of Muhammad Ali. He had objects thrown at him. The fans booed him out of town, on to the Reds and his native Cincinnati when his deal was up. Pirates fans who remember those times don’t recognize today’s fan base, urging the owner to spend money on multimillion-dollar ballplayers and how things have changed.

But let’s leave Parker for a moment. Look at how big contracts have worked for the Pirates, beginning with the largest in total dollars.

Who wore 22 for Pirates?

Forty-one players in Pirates history — including Jason Schmidt, John Wehner, Lloyd McClendon, Bert Blyleven, Richie Zisk and Gene Alley — have worn No. 22, but no one has used it the past five seasons. A few days after McCutchen was traded in January 2018, Bonnett got permission from the front office to make the number off-limits.

“Didn’t really have too many people ask for it over the years, maybe two or three,” Bonnett said. “After I told them it was McCutchen’s number, they pretty much backed off.”

Chris Archer had No. 22 for seven seasons with the Rays. When he was traded to the Pirates in July 2018, Archer asked to keep his number.

  • I’ve said this in other comments, but I feel like it has not been addressed. If he’s throwing so hard and barely getting the runner out on a routine play, and some of them were not routine, for sure, but sone of them were – Is he hesitating too much, is he taking too long to load his throw, what’s going on? Is he making routine plays look harder because he can’t field his position? I mean there must be some explanation. If it takes an absolute laser to get the guy out on a routine play and you’re barely getting him out…. Why does it take an absolute laser?
