How Much Pollution Is Caused By Cruise Ships?

A study by The European Federation for Transport and Environment revealed that cruise ships, which make up only 1% of the global fleet, account for 6 percent of black carbon emissions. This disproportionately bad environmental impact is evident in the deaths of over 50,000 Europeans annually due to shipping-based pollution. In the United Kingdom, cruise ships are a catastrophe for the environment, dumping toxic waste into our waters, filling the planet with carbon dioxide, and killing marine wildlife. Cruise ship air pollution is toxic and caused by the dirty fuel they burn, leading to serious human health problems.

A daily cruise trip averages 700-1000 pounds of carbon emissions, much higher than flying, driving, or a traditional land vacation. Sulphur dioxide emissions from a single cruise ship can equal the emissions from 13.1 million cars per day, exacerbating air pollution and acid rain. As of April 4, 2024, this resulted in an increase of 9% in SOx emissions, 18% in NOx emissions, and 25% in PM2.5 emissions, three toxic air pollutants.

A recent study found that a quarter of all ocean waste comes from cruise ships, with nearly 90% of this waste legally discharged at sea. Cruise ships also accounted for 15% of the nitrogen oxide (NOx) particles emitted by all of Europe’s passenger vehicles. A large cruise ship can have a carbon footprint greater than a small one.

I am a school teacher who was bitten by the travel bug many decades ago. My husband Billy has come along for the ride and now shares my dream to travel the world with our three children. The kids Pollyanna, 13, Cooper, 12 and Tommy 9 are in love with plane trips (thank goodness) and discovering new places, experiences and of course Disneyland.

  • Hi Bruce!, I’ve been studying the same thing, only that i’m considering the CO2 emissions..there’s no much information on the web about that, but I found that 1 cruise ship emits the same amount of CO2 (per kilometer) that 1 car with 2,5 passengers.. crazy isn’t?..\r Another thing that I found is that the amount of NOx, SOx, PM, CO2 emiteted in the year 2017 equivaled to the 15% of the cars in europe.. so I thing that is just a strategy of the aircrafts companies.. airplanes are the real problem, they have the same amount of emissions that a cruise..but for just 1 person!.\r \r Im searching this, cause i wanna travel throw a cruise from buenos aires to spain..17 days in a cruise for the same amount of money that 1 planes’ ticket.\r \r Have a nice day!

  • Your estimate of 2 gallons a day for a car I believe they use at least 4 gallons in an ideal situation unless electric hybrid! Yes the boat should use less fuel is mass transport also. In another twist boats can be made to use or converted to natural gas and can be hybrid systems, battery when in slow mode, the other fuels when at full speed!

  • You have to remember that not everyone drives the same amount of miles every day, or in the same traffic. A person who commutes 40 miles round-trip in Los Angeles will use more gas than someone who drives the same commute in a rural area with little traffic. By the same token, if you only drive a few errands each day, and your kids walk to and from school, you might only use a gallon of gas a day.

  • Here’s where your wrong, today’s diesel engines are cleaner than ever they’re cleaner than automobiles burning gas. The emissions that my semi puts off is basically nothing and people can argue all they want is basically nothing. The exhaust that comes out of my stack in my semi is actually cleaner then the air that it takes in. Back years ago is semi used to produce a lot of horrible admissions not today. So the news reports they have no clue what they’re talking about.
