What are the 3 largest cruise ships?

Cruise ships are large passenger ships used mainly for vacationing. Unlike ocean liners, passenger ships primarily used for transportation across seas or oceans, they typically embark on round-trip voyages to various attractive ports of call. There passengers may go on organized tours known as “shore excursions”. The largest may carry thousands of passengers in a single trip, and are some of the largest ships in the world by gross tonnage(GT), bigger than many large cargo ships. Cruise ships started to exceed ocean liners in size and capacity in the mid-1990s; before then, few were more than 50,000GT. In the decades since the size of the largest vessels has more than doubled. There have been nine or more new cruise ships added every year since 2001, most of which are 100,000GT or greater. In the two decades between 1988 and 2009, the largest cruise ships grew a third longer (268 to 360m (879 to 1,181ft)), almost doubled their widths (32.2 to 60.5m (106 to 198ft)), doubled the total passengers (2,744 to 5,400), and tripled in volume (73,000 GT to 225,000 GT). The largest have grown considerably since, particularly in passenger capacity; As of December2023, the largest cruise ship, Icon of the Seas, has a gross tonnage of 248,336, is 365m (1,198ft) long and holds up to 7,600 passengers.
Cruise ships are organized much like floating hotels, with a complete hospitality staff in addition to the usual ship’s crew. They cater to nautical tourists, with recent vessels being described as “balcony-laden floating condominiums”. The “megaships” went from a single deck with verandas to all decks with verandas, and feature ameneties such as theaters, fine-dining and chain restaurants, spas, fitness centers, casinos, sports facilities, and even amusement park attractions.
Cruise ships require electricity both for propulsion and onboard power. As with cargo ships, cruise vessels are designed with all the heavy machinery at the bottom of the hull and lightweight materials where feasible at the top, making them inherently stable even as passenger ships are getting ever taller, and most supplement design with stabilizer fins to further reduce rolling in heavy weather. While some cruise ships use traditional fixed propellers and rudders to steer, most larger ships use azimuth thrusters that can swivel left and right to steer, vastly improving vessel maneuverability.

What is so great about Virgin Cruises?
With luxurious inclusions on every single one of our cruises, you’ll always get exceptional value when voyaging with us. It’s something we’ve coined Always Included Luxury — which means that on every single cruise, we include dining at our 20+ eateries, entertainment, gratuities, wifi, unlimited fitness classes, still and sparkling water in your voyage fare. Discover more about what’s included on a Virgin Voyage cruise. See what our Sailors have to say about their choice between the two:
“My husband and I would choose a cruise with Virgin every single time. Everything they include means you aren’t constantly reaching into your pocket or worried about your bill at the end. Compared to hotels right now, cruising is the best value.”Lesley C.49, Florida.
“I like to call sailing with Virgin ‘Much More Inclusive’. I feel like some resorts trick you with inclusions but there are caveats. Same as some other cruise lines. Whereas Virgin is upfront. The dining is the best at sea. The crew is second to none.”Mim M.72, Nevada.

How many ships will Virgin Voyages have?
As of April 2024, Virgin Voyages has three ships in the fleet, with one more on order, all with an expected capacity of approximately 2,700 passengers each. The first ship, Scarlet Lady, began sailing August 6, 2021 from Portsmouth with UK only itineraries. Scarlet Lady began operating from PortMiami in October 2021, sailing mainly four-to-five night cruises in the Caribbean.
In 2011, Nirmal Saverimuttu, a Virgin Group executive, and Tom McAlpin, then-CEO of The World, conceptualized the idea for a cruise line inspired by the Virgin brand housed under the Virgin Group umbrella. Saverimuttu later collaborated with Bain Capital to begin market research and found that there was potential in the cruise industry for a new line to emerge and also identified a large, young demographic yet to experience cruising that could become the brand’s target market. Over the next three years, Saverimuttu and McAlpin raised US$700 million from Bain Capital, which had become lead investor, and other institutional and private investors, and also borrowed an additional US$1–1.5 billion. After the financial backing, on December 4, 2014, Virgin Group announced the establishment of Virgin Cruises. The cruise line would be led by Tom McAlpin, who was named president and CEO.
At time of establishment, Virgin announced the new cruise line’s fleet would consist of two ships and its headquarters would be based in the Miami/Fort Lauderdale area. In July 2015, the Miami-Dade County Commission granted Virgin Voyages approval to berth at PortMiami, and the company’s first contract for three cruise ships was finalized on October 18, 2016, the same day that Virgin Cruises rebranded as Virgin Voyages, in an effort to strengthen its marketing aimed at the younger demographic and new cruisers.

What is the largest cruise ship in the Virgin?
Scarlet Lady has a total of 1,408 passenger cabins and 813 crew cabins for a maximum capacity of 4,400 passengers and crew, which can accommodate over 2,770 passengers and 1,160 crew. Of the 1,408 passenger cabins, there are 78 suites, 1,030 balcony cabins, 95 window cabins, and 105 inside cabins. She is equipped with balconies on 86% of her cabins, with 93% of the cabins featuring an outside view. The ship’s livery consists of a silver hull, red funnel, and tinted windows, and also includes the Virgin “mermaid guide” figure featured on sister brands, Virgin Atlantic and Virgin America.
Scarlet Lady has 17 decks, a length of 277.2 metres (909ft), a draft of 8.05 metres (26.4ft), and a beam of 41 metres (135ft). She is powered by a diesel-electric genset system, with four Wärtsilä engines, producing 48 megawatts (64,000hp). Main propulsion is via two ABB Azipod XO units, having a combined power output of 32MW (43,000hp). The system gives the vessel a service speed of 20 knots (37km/h; 23mph) and a maximum speed of 22 knots (41km/h; 25mph). Wärtsilä also provided the ship’s navigation systems, a hybrid scrubber system to remove sulfur dioxide from the exhaust, and a selective catalytic reduction system to reduce nitrogen oxide emissions. The ship partially produces her own energy through a 1 megawatt (1,300hp) production system that uses the waste heat from her diesel engines.
In February 2021, it was announced that Scarlet Lady would be equipped with satellite internet connectivity from SES using the O3b medium Earth orbit satellites to provide passengers with free ultra-fast, low-latency onboard wi-fi internet access.
