How Many Feet Long Is A Cruise Ship?

The average size of a cruise ship is around 1,000 feet in length, or roughly three football fields. Ships are measured by gross tonnage (GT), and each ship size comes with its own unique dimensions. The largest cruise ships can carry thousands of passengers in a single trip and are some of the largest ships in the world by gross tonnage (GT). Small cruise ships might measure anywhere from 150 to 450, while the average modern cruise ship is two and a half times bigger than the Titanic, which was 882 feet long with a gross tonnage of 46,428 GT and space for 2,435 guests.

To help compare the sizes, we’ve rounded up and ranked the 30 largest cruise ships in the world by gross tonnage (which is a measure of volume, not weight). The average cruise ship is 1,000 feet long, the size of three football fields, and carries over 5,000 passengers and cruise members. In contrast, the smallest is the size of a small ship.

The average length of a cruise ship impacts the overall experience and amenities available. Longer ships offer better stability and the ability to withstand rough seas. River cruise ships are much smaller, ranging in length from 110 feet to 600 feet and only 40 to 50 feet wide. The smaller size of river cruise ships limits onboard amenities that can be offered.

The largest cruise ship, Icon of the Seas, has a gross tonnage of 248,336, is 365 meters (1,198 ft) long, and holds up to 7,600 passengers. The Utopia of the Seas has a gross tonnage of 236,860 GTs, a length of 1,188 feet, and a maximum beam of 211 feet.
