The cruise industry, estimated to be around US23.8 billion in 2021, has 13.9 million passengers per year. The largest cruise lines with over 1,000 passengers per year are Royal Caribbean, Carnival Cruise Line, and Bohai Cruises. Royal Caribbean is the largest cruise line in terms of number of ships and revenue, with 26 ships and a total of 1,050 employees. Carnival Cruise Line is the leading provider of year-round cruises in The Bahamas, the Caribbean, and Mexico, as well as seasonal cruises in Canada, New England, and Alaska.
As of early 2023, there are at least 37 cruise line companies, but smaller lesser-known ones may also exist. The Cruise Line International Association (CLIA) recognizes 62 members, including ocean, river, and specialty cruise lines, hailing from various major countries. These companies offer passengers the opportunity to enjoy the beautiful natural landscape and local culture of practically every corner of the world.
There are various types of cruise companies, including family-friendly lines, luxury getaway lines, river cruise lines, and companies that specialize in specific areas. A handful of U.S.-based players dominate today’s global cruise market, including Carnival Corporation, Royal Caribbean Cruises, and Norwegian Cruise Line Holdings Ltd.
There are roughly two dozen major cruise lines in existence, though the number changes yearly as the industry ebbs and flows with the economy. Friends of the Earth’s Cruise Ship Report Card compares the environmental footprint of 18 major cruise lines and 213 cruise ships.
Cruise Lines include Azamara, Celebrity Cruises, and Cunard Line, each with approximately 690 guests each.
