The Clipper Round the World Yacht Race is a biennial sailing race that takes amateur crews on one or more legs of a circumnavigation of the globe in 11 specially-designed identical yachts owned by Clipper Ventures. Professional skippers and additional qualified persons (AQPs) lead each teams on the 10 yachts. Since then, almost 6,000 Race Crew from all walks of life and more than 60 nations have trained and raced in the race.
When a Clipper Race yacht arrives at its destination, there are several tasks that need to be completed before crew can leave their yachts. Two crew members are always cooking, reducing the crew to 15. These 15 are then split into two watches, resulting in 7 or 8 people on watch at any one time. As a member of the Clipper Race crew, you will be taking on one of the greatest challenges on Earth, testing your wits, skills, and courage in an endurance race across the toughest oceans.
The global yacht race sees adventurers from all walks of life take on the exceptional challenge of racing across the world’s oceans on board a 70-foot yacht. Many of the Race Crew have no prior sailing experience before 12 People Per Yacht. The current fleet of 11 yachts are Clipper 70 yachts that were first used in the 2013–14 race. Clipper ships were so named because they were fast sailors, a term derived from to “clip”, which is getting as much propulsion as possible from the available wind. They represented the utmost evolution and refinement in the design of sailships. The name was adopted by the 1830s for a fast seagoing, cargo-carrying vessel. Up to 20 nautical mph speeds have been recorded but with limited cargo-carrying capacity (long and thin design with large sail surface). Because of this advantage, they were able to fill a valuable niche of “express” cargo and passenger services, much similar to what long-distance airliners assumed from the 1960s. They usually carried crews of about 25 to 50 sailors. Their impact on trade was very significant, as before their introduction, it could take between 12 and 15 months to sail from South Asia to England. By 1850, this journey was halved. For instance, the clipper ship “Oriental” could sail from Hong Kong to London in 97 days. The absolute one-day distance record made by a clipper involved 436 nautical miles.
Clipper ships were fast, but no specific rig type was standard. By 1845, the term was used in conjunction with a name indicating the cargo carried, or area served by a fast-sailing vessel, and a specific rig type was usually indicated. For instance, the California clipper, the China clipper, and the tea clipper were all ship-rigged vessels with sharp bows and were designed for speed. As hinted, the growth of the China trade in the second half of the 19th century created the most substantial impetus for the usage of clippers. Tea was a particularly time-sensitive commodity since its quality deteriorated with time and thus commercially benefited from fast clipper services.
The clipper era ended when reduced freight rates made possible the introduction of steamships that offered the double benefit of faster speeds as well as using direct paths. The economies of scale they conferred undermined the competitiveness of sailships over increasingly longer distances. The opening of the Suez Canal in 1869 also favored the usage of steamships in long-distance trade between Europe and Asia by reducing travel distances and undermining the niche advantage that clipper ships had over such distances. By the early 20th century, clipper ships were no longer competitive and disappeared from global shipping lanes.

What makes a yacht a clipper?
Named after the verb “clip” which historically meant to run or fly swiftly, clippers were fast square rigged sailing vessels with three masts. They were very narrow and incredibly fast, designed to “clip” over the waves as opposed to pushing through them. Every element of their design was concerned with achieving optimum speed, rather than cargo capacity or comfort. Internal space was given over to stowage for extra sails and accommodation for the crew required to handle them, and so they were limited to carrying low volume but high value cargoes such as tea, opium, spices, mail or passengers. Clippers raced each other to complete standard journeys in record times, competing to deliver the first cargo of a year’s tea harvest to London, and thus fetch the greatest price. To do so, they were sailed hard and few had lifespans exceeding twenty years. When other ships would reduce their sail area to weather a storm, clippers were known to push on regardless, and the last China clippers were the fastest commercial sailing vessels ever made. Despite their ability to deliver a cargo in the fastest possible time, the age of the clipper came to an end when they had to compete against steam ships that were not governed by the wind and could keep to a schedule, and which could utilise the newly built Suez Canal in 1869, compounded by the effects of an economic slump.
We thought that naming our latest offering, designed for fast, powerful waves, after the clippers of old seemed appropriate. When other surfers are under-gunned, the Clipper delivers the ability to keep going, getting in early and delivering the goods. And it’s nice to take inspiration from the old tea chests in the workshop, and to have finally drawn some direct inspiration from a humble cup of tea!
