How Long Trip Around The World Sailing Boat Take?

Sailing around the world takes between 3 to 5 years, with the current world record being 40 days on a trimaran. The fastest boat to sail around the world is a trimaran, and the shortest time recorded is 40 days. If you are on a sailing cruiser, it will most likely take you somewhere between 1.5 to 5 years.

The world record is 40 days on a racing trimaran, but this is not the type of circumnavigation many plan to complete. It can take about 15 months to sail around the world, but it is better to spend a few years at sea and not rush the trip. There are three types of speeds at which you can circumnavigate: non-stop (100-200 days), express (1-2 years), and recreational (3 years). The slowest group is defined for yachts with an expected elapsed time of 195 days or over, increasing progressively to the times for 40ft vessels.

The duration of a global circumnavigation usually takes around 100 days non-stop. The current holder for a crewed yacht is Francis Joyon, who completed the route in 40 days, 23 hours, 30 minutes, and 30 seconds. With this kind of average boat speed, the duration of the circumnavigation would be about 200 days.

To sail around the world gradually over 5-10 years, one should take a Basic Keelboat class, get a year of sailing on smaller boats like 15-20, and then consider other sailing routes and speeds. By following these guidelines, one can explore the freedom and beauty of sailing around the world and make informed decisions about their journey.
