Cruise lines generally allow passengers to bring at least two suitcases, each less than 50 pounds, and carry-on luggage. The rules and regulations for cruise luggage depend on the cruise line, but most cruise lines encourage or suggest limiting luggage to two suitcases, each under 50 pounds. Prohibited items found in your bag will be removed and may be held.
A good rule of thumb is to pack 1-2 pieces of luggage per person, with a maximum weight of 50 lbs or 22.5 kg. A carry-on bag is recommended for embarkation day. Each guest is permitted to carry a reasonable amount of personal property, including luggage, but it is recommended to limit the number of pieces taken.
Upon arrival at the port, checked luggage is handed over to porters who arrange for it to be put onto the ship and delivered to your cabin. Workers wheel the gurneys filled with luggage into the ship, and passengers take their carry-on bags into the ship when they board. Luggage collection and delivery are conducted by porters and sent through security screening. All baggage brought on board the ship will be X-rayed.
Guests have the option to carry their luggage on board or check-in luggage prior to boarding. Luggage may include suitcases, trunks, valises, satchels, bags, etc. Most airlines charge for checking a bag, unless you have status or credit card perks. You are also expected to tip the cruise porters when checking a bag.
The cruise line will provide luggage tags either by mail or with documents you can print from the cruise. To help you plan, limit your luggage to a maximum of one bag per person for a 3-5 night cruise and no more than one bag per person for longer cruises.
