How Does A Snorkel Keep Water Out?

A snorkel is a device used to navigate underwater, designed to keep water out of the tube. It is made up of three types: wet, semi-dry, and dry. Wet snorkels keep the tip of the snorkel out of the water, while semi-dry snorkels have a splash guard to prevent water from entering accidentally at the surface. Dry snorkels are designed with a float valve to prevent water from entering accidentally at the surface or when diving down.

A snorkel mask forms a watertight seal over the eyes and covers the nose to keep water out. Good dry snorkels are highly effective in keeping water out of the snorkel tube, making them ideal for beginners. They are designed to use a splash guard at the top of the tube instead of a dry top. If water does manage to get inside, the top of the tube includes a splash guard to keep water out when snorkeling at the surface. The snorkels also include a purge valve that seals up the breathing tube when it is completely submerged, stopping water from getting in.

Dry snorkels are ideal for beginner snorkelers, but they can trap air in the tube and create extra buoyancy and drag when diving underwater. To keep most of the water out of the mask, snorkelers must exchange air at the surface of the water through the breathing tube. If the snorkel is submerged beneath the waterline, they can be used to breathe while keeping their face underwater.

There are different types of snorkels, such as wet, semi-dry, and dry, but not each type helps keep water out. Snorkels allow you to breathe while keeping your face underwater, and they include a rubber mouthpiece attached to a tube.
