Carnival has strategically placed ports of departure within driving distance of hundreds of millions of people, including underserved ports like Norfolk and Charleston. The easiest way to use your phone on a cruise is to connect to the ship’s Wi-Fi, which works on any ship you sail. The WMSatSea network only works when the ship is at sea at least 12 nautical miles from shore due to regulations.
Carnival’s biggest operations are out of Port Miami and Port Canaveral in Florida; Galveston, Texas; Long Beach, California; and New Orleans, all major cruise hubs. Due to regulations, the WMSatSea network only works when the ship is at sea at least 12 nautical miles from shore.
The Carnival Hub App covers everything for your upcoming Carnival Cruise Line vacation, including complimentary water shuttle service at certain ports of call. Guests arriving before 1:30pm can check their bags with a porter and enjoy lunch on Lido Deck before debarking. If docked, guests can walk off the vessel directly onto dry land via a movable ramp called a gangway.
Carnival ships do not go out to sea or back to home port after the cruise, starting another cruise at the same port where the stops last anywhere from 6 to 10 hours. After the cruise, guests can relax on the beach or visit local shops.

Do I need to collect baggage at port of entry?
Customs Inspection. At this stage you will need to collect your bags, even if you are not at your final destination. If you had items to declare on your Customs Declaration Form, then you should follow the signs to the “Items to Declare” area. Otherwise, follow the signs to the “Nothing to Declare” area. An officer will take your Customs Declaration Form. The officer has the right to inspect the contents of your bag at this time.
After going through Customs, return your bags to be loaded onto your next flight. Welcome to the United States of America!
Does your passport get stamped at every port on a cruise?
To the OPs question we would answer, maybe yes and maybe no :). It depends where, in the world, you go. For example, when we were just in Asia (Japan, Korea, and Taiwan), all those country stamp Passports every time you enter (in the case of Japan they also stamp when you depart). On a Caribbean cruise, it is rare to ever get a Passport stamped. In Europe, your Passport will be stamped when you enter a Schengen country. But you can move between Schengen countries without getting any additional stamps. If you enter the UK you will again have your Passport stamped.
The funny thing is that sometimes countries do not bother to do anything. This happened to us in April 2022, when we cruised to Monte Carlo on the Seabourn Ovation. When we arrived in Monte Carlo, there were no formalities and we just walked off the ship onto the pier and were met by our car/driver. Nobody from Monaco was at the port to stamp anything. A few weeks later this caused us some problems when we entered Germany (from the Czech Republic). The Germans are one of the few Schegen countries that have everyone go through Passport control (even when on domestic flights). The Germans were very unhappy because we had no entry stamp for a Schengen country! Fortunately, we had plenty of backup documents including our cruise tickets, airline tickets, etc. to prove that our itinerary.
What happens if you are late to the port on a cruise?
- Arriving after the Guest Onboard Time (akalast Port Arrival Time) may prevent you from sailing. Your port will have a Cruise Terminal opening time when Guests may arrive at the terminal and wait until their Port Arrival Time Boarding Group. If you miss Guest Onboard Time you will likely be left behind. Do not be late.
- Arriving 30 minutes after your Port Arrival Time and before Guest Onboard Time will still be allowed on the ship.
- Arrival 30 minutes after “All Aboard” on any Port of Departureor Port of Call will be left at the Port where you will need to arrange for your transportation to the next Port of Call or back to your home. The only exception is that if your Port Adventure of through Disney Cruise Line then the ship will wait for you. This happened to us in Santorini, Greece, where the ship waited an extra hour for a group of us.
- Arrival 30 minutes late because of the airline and the flight was arranged through the Disney Cruise Line Air Program. Disney will work with you, if possible, to help you get to the first port of call.
Cindy, I hope this clears up any confusion about when you should arrive and the consequences of arriving late. Please feel free to write me back directly with any follow-up questions or for other Disney vacation planning tips.

What happens if you get to cruise port early?
Boarding will continue up until one to two hours before the scheduled departure time. If you arrive at the terminal a few minutes before the ship’s departure, you will not be allowed on.
This is usually in the late afternoon or evening. I’ve been able to check-in for a cruise as early as 10:30am and as late as 3:00pm before.
You can usually gauge the ship’s last call by looking at the ship’s itinerary. If it says the departure time is 5:00pm, you will want to be at the terminal no later than 2:30pm, just to be safe.
Should I select an early or late check-in time?. When you get the notification that check-in is available for your cruise, you have an important decision to make: what time do you want to select?
The online check-in process varies from cruise line to cruise line. Royal Caribbean’s opens 45 days before your sail date, while Carnival’s only opens 14 days!
What do you do on port days on a cruise?
Do I have to get off the cruise ship when it calls on a port?. Nope. The choice is totally yours. You can go ashore on a tour, explore the cruise port on your own or stay onboard and relax by the pool, book a (usually discounted on port days) spa treatment or take advantage of other activities on your ship during the day.
How do I get off the ship?. Your ship will usually arrive at its destination in the early morning. After the crew is given the go-ahead by the proper port officials, passengers can begin debarking. The cruise director will usually make an announcement telling passengers they’re welcome to go ashore and directing them to the proper exits or assembly points. Cruisers who’ve booked ship-sponsored shore excursions, suite guests, those who are upper-tier loyalty program members (meaning they’ve cruised with the line many times before) and those who’ve paid for priority debarkation are the first people allowed to leave the ship. To avoid crowding at the exits, passengers on larger ships might have to report to a designated area ahead of time to obtain color-coded or numbered cards that dictate the order in which they’re allowed to go ashore.
Depending on the depth of the water and the available infrastructure at the port you’re visiting, your ship will either dock at a pier or anchor offshore. If your ship is docked, you’ll be able to simply walk off the vessel directly onto dry land via a movable ramp called a gangway. If it’s anchored, you’ll have to take a tender a small boat that ferries passengers ashore in groups. (Remember those color-coded cards we just mentioned? They’re particularly common in cases where tendering is necessary.) Be warned that gangways and the tendering process can sometimes be tricky for passengers with mobility issues. If you require assistance, visit the customer service desk onboard ahead of time to make special arrangements.
Can I stay on a cruise ship while in port?
Alternatively, if the ship docks downtown, guests could choose to leave the ship as soon as it’s cleared for a quick look around, then return to the ship early and still enjoy a few hours of peace and quiet. There are no rules. Ultimately cruise travelers are free to decide their own course of action, whether that means spending every possible moment ashore or treating the ship as the destination.
Do people get left at port on cruises?
Find a port agent. A cruise ship will leave passengers behind on shore if they arrive back at the ship too late, but the ship staff has procedures in place to help you.
If you are not on the ship and the departure time is drawing near, a security officer may enter your cabin and open your safe to locate your passport, driver’s license, credit cards or any other important stuff you have left there. They’ll also collect your medication and any other necessities you will need because the ship is about to strand you on shore, and you will need to make your own way home.

What happens if you miss your port on a cruise?
When you miss a ship at a port of call, go to the port staff first. Each cruise line has a port agent who can help. The line’s agent can hand over your passport and can help you contact your ship to make arrangements to meet up in the next port.
The next call should be to your travel insurance provider. “During a travel disruption, contact your provider’s 24-hour assistance team as soon as you can,” says Steven Benna, marketing manager at travel insurance firm SquareMouth. “They will explain your policy’s coverage for the situation and can help you find additional travel arrangements, like catching up to your cruise at the next port.” Be sure to keep any receipts relating to your catchup travel to include when you file a claim with your insurance provider, Benna says.
Two travel insurance benefits can help in this situation, according to Benna: missed connection and travel delay. “If your flight to your port gets delayed, the missed connection benefit was designed to help you catch up at your ultimate destination,” he says. “Alternatively, some policies have a travel delay benefit, which can similarly cover rebooking while also refunding the cost of meals and accommodations for trips delayed at least 3-12 hours.”
Cruisers can buy a travel insurance policy all the way up until the day before their departure and still have the full benefits activated on their departure date. “Whether you planned your cruise way ahead of time or booked at the last minute, you can rest easy knowing you can still get coverage,” Benna says.
