Skiffs are small boats, usually propelled by sails or oars, used for work, leisure, utility, and fishing. They have a one-person or small crew and are typically small and lightweight, making them easy to maneuver in tight spaces. Skiff boats are often powered by an outboard motor and have a simple hull design that allows them to be small and maneuverable. Skiffs have a large following among boating enthusiasts due to their unusual design.
The definition of a skiff has blurred in recent years, with many today’s skiff classes being based in Australia and New Zealand in the form of 12 ft (3.66 m), 13 ft (3.96 m), 16 ft (4.88 m), and 18 ft (5.49 m) skiffs. The 29er, 49er, SKUD, and Musto Skiff are all considered to have developed from the skiff concept, all of which are sailed internationally.
The Goat Island Skiff is a light and simple 16ft sailing dinghy designed for rowing or sailing. It is 12 ft (3.7 m) in length, with a 14 length and a 58 beam and tipping. The Skylark is a high performance two person light weigh skiff originally conceived as a boat for the Olympics, with a hull weight of just 40kg and a hull length of 4.5m.
Sailing boats range in size, from lightweight dinghies like the Optimist dinghy (2.36m) all the way up to superyachts as large as 90 meters. Many boats in the 24 to 26 foot range do very well and are built for it, like the Contessa 26.
In summary, skiff boats are small, lightweight, and versatile watercraft that offer numerous advantages for both recreational and commercial use. They have gained popularity among boating enthusiasts due to their unique design and ability to handle various sizes and weights.

… more comfortable ways to travel the oceans of the world… but there’s nothing quite like the serene experience of a sailing boat.
I am perusal this vlog in the Canaries on our 2010 43ft benetau oceanis. We, 2 of us, are living since a few years full time aboard and have plenty of place. Running costs are 5 to 6 k€ per year INCLUDING full insurance (boat is insured for 145k€) we did the Atlantic circuit 5 to 6 years ago. Nothing broke down, not really much extra running costs. Blue water sailing boats are a term invented for a positive description of an old derelict boat. And boat life is exactly as hard as you want to make it, we have an easy relaxed boat life.
Buy a boat for the sailing you will definitely do and rent one for things you maybe want to do someday. If you want a boat for cruising the Keys and the Bahamas buy that boat. If you want to sail in Greece someday charter a boat in Greece and sail away. Don’t buy a 50 foot ocean crosser that’s too big and expensive to do the Keys.
I am a native NYer 😊 I have subbed in. I will be buying a boat soon. Getting a lot of great info from you! For 2 women what type of boat should we start with? I want to go island hopping in the Caribbean for the winters here in NYC. I’m a combat army veteran and want to be relatively self-reliant. I want a catamaran 😅 but think I’m going to start with a monohull.
Hi Chris, perusal alot of your articles, researched for now over a year and analyzed in depth our needs, I nailed down our future Sailboat selection to be either a Beneteau 473 or the Beneteau 48 in a 3 Cabin version. Which one (and why) would you choose if you could? Many thanks 🙏🏼 in advance for a short feedback…🙏🏼🏝️ Dominic
What is the ideal 2-cabin sailboat size for coastal cruising for 2 people who don’t want to have to visit a marina more than once a week at the most and want to have onboard all amenities ie A/C, heating, hot water, water-maker, extra fridge, solar, autopilot, wind-vane, SUP, diving gear for 2, dive compressor, generator, foldable bike, satellite internet, EPIRB, Iridium Go, spare anker, spinnaker, gennaker, code 0, lazy bag, spinnaker pole, covers for navigation instruments, rudders, winches etc? I would assume anything smaller than Beneteau 45 will be too small.
Thirty four years back, I joined a Swiss eighty foot steel ketch in Australia’s bicentenary celebration. We sailed from Brisbane to Hobart. I was mocked, bring aboard my equipment. To my astonishment, I was the only one aboard commpetant to sail it. 70 knot winds and forty foot waves were about to destroy it when at 9am, I excused myself and seized the wheel, amid general panic. I sailed a comfortable yacht, a true course for nine hours receiving course changes from the owner but, when I looked about I found we were in the wrong bay and we were about to be knocked down by the stronger upper hurricane force winds, being drawn down to the surface behind a five hundred foot tall headland. We lived but the owner was angry I had showed up his deadly incompetence.
Including the ugly and ridiculous ‘Sailing Yacht A’ at the end of this list is inappropriate. The “Chapters” in the description don’t cover all the yachts shown. The Real Game here is to guess what is the real boat and what is just a picture or footage of random boats. It’s so annoying and makes the difference between a good content and a clickbite content, made just to get the “numbers” to earn money. Good for you. Not for the viewer who, in the end, doesn’t know what he watched! Bye 👎
