Where do most tourists in Hawaii come from?

Hawaii has experienced significant growth in foreign tourists since 2011, with a record 8. 3 million visitors arriving in 2014, spending $14. 7 billion. This number increased to 9. 4 million visitors in 2017, spending over $16 billion. The dominant industries in Hawaii have also changed, with the addition of Pan Am’s flight route to the islands rapidly increasing the number of visitors. The years following statehood led to more than double the number of passengers arriving at Honolulu airport.

The tourism industry has become heavily dependent on Hawaii’s economy, with the addition of this industry leading to significant growth. However, some researchers believe that this may leave Hawaii susceptible to external economic forces, such as economic recession, airline strikes, or varying fuel prices, which could devastate the local economy. The 2008 national economic recession hit Hawaii’s tourism industry hard, with hotel occupancy dropping to 60%, a level not seen since the terrorist attacks in 2001.

The growth in the tourism industry has been driven by factors such as the growth of the tourism industry, the introduction of Pan Am’s flight route, and the impact of external economic forces such as economic recession, airline strikes, and varying fuel prices. As Hawaii transitions from a Kingdom to a Territory to a State, the tourism industry will continue to play a crucial role in the state’s economy.

  • I lived on Oahu for almost three years, right in the neighborhood of China Walls. Truly the most beautiful place on earth. Not a day go by I don’t miss the aloha land. China Walls is for pro surfers only. I’ve seen too many tourists jumping in and struggling to come back up, and had to be rescued. On Oahu I want to recommend too the snorkeling spot of Hanauma Bay and surf perusal at Sandy Beach. Both on the east side close to China Walls.

  • What’s going on guys… Really appreciate this article. A few things I’d like to add as I worked on a voluntary farm on the Big Island for a few months. If you visit Hawaii please be humble and respectful. This is a slow chill vibe, unlike anywhere else. It was a big transition going from Boston to Hawaii but it taught me a lot, I’m sure the mainlanders will enjoy that gear shift. Also few places to check out on the big island (great suggestions in the article) be sure to check out Kileakilkua Bay or James Cook Bay (same place) you will have the chance to swim with wild Spinner Dolphins, They’re very playful and safe. Sharks avoid the pod so no need to worry. If the dolphins aren’t jumping out the water and spinning, so just breeching no twist, avoid the water they are Bottle Nose and the alpha will attack you. All 700lbs of swimming muscle. But I swam with Spinner almost everyday safe and sound. The other place on the BI is 7 step. You walk down 7 naturally formed lava steps into an aquarium from shore. Disney couldn’t replicate this even if they tried. Disney please do not buy 7 step and charge admission like you did on the other side of the island everyone on the Big Island hates you haha. Peace and have fun.

  • hi Ryan! could you tell the best way to visit Hawaii…I am photographer and I travel alone so it use to be more expensive. Really, I don’t know which is the cheapest way in Oahu mainly. (hostels/rent a car/rent a camper/???) And in the case of a camper…..is it mandatory to sleep in campings or can I stop to sleep anywhere I wish??? – Thanks and regards friend !

  • Why not make sure that you are truly saved by Jesus Christ and practice this way. Remorsefully confess with your heart your sins to Jesus Christ who is God and tell Him that you right now are repenting of your sins and you want to be born again of the Spirit from above. Tell Jesus that you are remorsefully sorry for breaking His commandments and that you are begging for forgiveness from Him. Allow His blood from the cross to wash away your sins. After this is done with your heart successfully the Holy Spirit will come to live within you and He will rebuild you from the inside out. Look for signs that you are saved. Things like spreading the good news from Jesus, getting other people saved, a craving for the word of God, reading the Bible, etc… These things are known as a calling and fruit bearing. If you’re not bearing fruit then keep doing it. Sometimes it takes time to get saved. Read Matthew chapter 13 from the King James Bible. God bless!!!!!!!

  • God loves you so very, very much that He sent His Holy Son Jesus from heaven to earth, to be born of a virgin, to grow up and die on a cross for our sins, and to be put into a tomb 3 days and rise from the dead the third day, and He (Jesus) went back up to heaven. We must receive Sinless Jesus sincerely to be God’s child(John 1:12).After we get saved by grace through faith in Christ, if we truly love the Lord Jesus Christ, then we will obey Jesus(John 14:15). Mark 1:15 “And saying, the time is fulfilled, and the kingdom of God is at hand: Repent ye, and believe the gospel.” Jesus said in John 14:15 “If you love Me, keep My commandments. “There’s a real hell. It says in Revelation 21:8 “But for the cowardly, and unbelieving, and abominable, and murderers, and immoral persons and sorcerers and idolaters and all liars, their part will be in the lake that burns with fire and brimstone…” Please sincerely & truely receive Holy Jesus and put your true faith and trust in Him today!

  • O my god, one of the ways to disrespect our islands and islanders is to promote this ( Noisy, polluting ) Tour helicopter industry. the disrespectful pilots are targeting harassing us when we complain, we have friends driven off the Big island from harassment, please, go to hicop.org and help, sign the new petition. Mahalo

  • I appreciate your love of our homeland but can people please stop traveling to Hawaii? At least during this pandemic. I mean I live on Kauai, and before our dumb ass Governor opened our islands again, despite protests from our mayor, we havent had any COVID case in maybe 2months? Could be longer, could be shorter. But now that we’re open we almost have 20 cases. On an island as small as we are that’s enough to spread EVERYWHERE. I know we live in a beautiful place that is warm compared to your snow but for the sake of the people here please just wait till COVID is done. Side note: TRAFFIC SUCKS NOW
