Fuel Cannot Be Transferred From The Munar Trip Module?

The Munar Excursion Module (M.E.M.) in KSP is essentially the ascent stage of the Apollo Lunar Module. However, there is an option called “Fuel Transfer Obeys Crossfeed Rules” that ensures fuel won’t flow across parts that don’t permit fuel crossfeed, such as a heat shield or through docking ports with fuel flow deactivated.

The M.E.M. has a shroud that doesn’t work well with other parts and doesn’t line up when attached directly to an object that is 1.875m. If there’s enough fuel left, players can try getting a rough small Keribin orbit before deorbiting.

Restock’s latest update added a gold-foil variant to the small landing legs, so players were inspired to update their old “Munar Module” design, based heavily on the Apollo LM. The command module has a crew capacity of 2 (required) and an electric capacity of 150.0 ⚡. Fuel tank contains liquid fuel, 54 oxygen, and 66 monopropellant.

KSP allows fuel transfer between docked vehicles, allowing players to refuel and send landers. The new Munar Excursion Module is outfitted with its own RCS thrusters and a small amount of monopropellant, liquid fuel, and oxidizer.

In order to have as much fuel left as possible, the lander core has no engines and rocket fuel. Once in Munar orbit, the RCS thrusters are enough to transfer from the core.

It’s time to put Kerbals down on the Mun, but did I budget enough given the many required inclination changes?

To properly communicate with munar missions we need a satellite network in munar orbit, so our next mission combines an …

  • Fun times, this reminds me of the time three days back when I had a lander with 3 one-man capsules (wasn’t enough science yet for bigger ones, but still wanted to send a team), that was designed for landing on Mun, overshot Mun and got to Minmus on the first launch. Though, it proved too weak for Mun’s gravity on the second (ran out of fuel, even tried to use the backpack somehow, unsuccessfully), however, Jeb wasn’t at peace with ending up on Mun (who was then alone in three capsules because of my own mistake), beamed all the science from samples back to Kerbin, which was enough to unlock the 3-man capsule and expect his comrades come and save him in a new, more advanced lander. Jeb style, like in the movie by Nassault. 😀

  • Great job Scott. I think you have done wonders with this game and managed to keep the interest of many people of all ages tuned in to watch a game about space and a bit of science. I know it’s thanks to the Kerbal Space Program game and studio behind it but your really inspiring many people to try and understand more about space than they other wise might not have. You sir are a dam good youtuber.

  • I also was in a fuel-related pickle once when I was returning from a Minmus mission in KSP. But thankfully I didn’t have to let my Kerbal go out and push the spacecraft, I had RCS on my vessel and thus had the ability to push myself with the RCS in Docking Mode, which was enough to get into a return trajectory. However at first I just managed to spin out of control, because I forgot to turn off the reaction wheel of the crew capsule.

  • Hey scott, this might make it a bit easier for you, but when you are on EVA, you can transfer all collected science into the capsule by right clicking it and selecting store data. It is possible to abuse it by storing one ground sample and then collecting another and retrieving the kerbal and ship seperatly, but I dont see it that way. I mean the more rocks you get from the moon doesnt mean they arent all scientifically less valuable. But thats the hint and keep up the good work!!!

  • Getting out and pushing is not your only option there. Imagine that you have a ball on a rope and you begin spinning around so that the ball is being held strait outward by its centripetal acceleration. If you release the ball, it will travel along a path tangential to its circular path. The same can be used for your spacecraft. Spin it with SAS torque, then decouple the command module section so that its tangential velocity is prograde to your munar orbit. I believe that would easily give you the needed 5 m/s. That’s what I use on my apollo missions to deorbit the lunar lander into the munar surface.

  • I have not use remote-tech for a while, so I do not know when the strong dipole antenna is unlocked, but what I usually did while using remotetech was launch 4 geostationary satellites with large dishes and the 5,000 km antennas. As long as the satellites had a period fairly close to 6 hours the antennas will always be in range of each other, allowing the dishes to be used exclusively for long range-communication

  • did you know when you land back at kerbin and take the eva report from the precarious situation you can right click the capsule and store experiments before dropping to the ground rather than going through the hassle of getting back in then getting out again. might save you a couple of seconds per mission

  • Funny thing. According to my calculations, due to the much lower size (and thus gravity), it takes less DeltaV to land something on Minmus and then send it back to Kerbin, than it does to do the same with the Mun, despite Minmus being further away. The only consideration is that it takes longer (a few days).

  • there is a science library/monitor that is quite handy as when you enter a new biome it will show what science remains to be done there. also I have made some little rovers with the mars like wheels and an array of 1×6 solar panels one on each side usually l/r of center and one on top. by opening and closing the panels you can flip a rover right side up.

  • Hey Scott I love your show and when you said no one suggested a better title I thought I would help. How about: Life, The Universe and Science Kerbal Trek Kerbal Trek The Science Generation Kerbal Trek Deep Kerbal Nine The Mun and Back Again a Kerbal story by Scott Manley Kerbal Wars a New Kerbin To Minmus and Beyond

  • As an atheist I can understand why some people might get offended by astronauts reading the bible, assuming it was broadcasted, but for me personally I honestly couldn’t give a flying frack what you believe. If you wanna read the bible, then go ahead, by all means. As long as your not trying to shove whatever religion down my throat and conform to your beliefs, I don’t care what you believe.

  • when i started playing KSP i made a little too strong rocket and when i launched it i accidentaly created an insterstelar space ship…basicly i launched it and left the engines on and i was new at this i was looking at controls and i was going straight up and then i found a map that shows orbit or trajectory…and i just saw it increas and increas and eventualy it broke off kerbal and it made an orbit around the sun i quickly shut down the engines and went a bit on a trip with still HUGE ammount of fuel and i tryed to go back and new as i was i aimed it at kerbal and fired engines and i just watched it break of the orbit and there was just a small curve next to kerbal that ejects me into space…and yes i tryed to go for planet to drag me in but i was going way to fast and i ended out of the solar system…:/ by accident…my 3rd flight acctualy first two were crashes..no wings and other stuf…

  • Scott you should have saw my amazing sati network, I have like 30 of them in orbit. In a pattern that had each sati at a 45 degree angle to the one before it, so I had sati often going head on with each other. Also i learned being a little to anal on orbit is kinda bad. I made orbits so exact that i had one sati collide with another orbiting in the other direction. But that did make me feel kinda proud, knowing that I made such consistent orbits that sati could collide into each other. Note the difference between AP and PE was on average like 200m even at 3 million km orbits. I used rcs to adjust those. Also Scott can you do a mun landing but with solid boosters, thus you have to get the thurst just right allong with the timing and alt. so when you fire and the boosters burn out your right on the surface no damage. Would be a great challenge to test your amazing kerbal skills i think. For hard mode you could have it a landing and and taking off with meet with orbiting craft. With no liquad rockets, but RCS is allowed only for docking part.

  • I’m running something similar myself: deadly reentry, ferram aerospace, remote tech, kw, b9, and interstellar. Unfortunately it’s becoming an exercise in frustration. Whenever I switch to landed ships they have a tendency to spontaneously explode. Hope you have more luck. 😉 Think there’s a few bugs hiding in the mods.

  • i landed on the moon with a ship that had those metal thingys name (i cant remember) they supported my ship as i was landing at 150 m/s and my wings did help me slow down alot and i landed.Place my Mexican flag down, did some science shit then toke off and went to minus and lost Mexican Mk.2 im mid flight due to the ship had bugged out and when flying back to kerbin..

  • Hey there Scott i wonder if it is possible to create a good range of Antenna on kerbal. All of them would be in contact of each other with the Space Centre. This way your communication Satellite can use the Antenna Relay all the time if they get out of range and it will be way easier to control everything in space I started my own project inspired from what i just said and I was able to land a relay on the mountains away from the space centre and an other one on the Island with the airport. I think it is possible to land a lot of small planes into the Ocean about 30 km far of each other or using the mountains as much as possible. This way my dozen of satellites in orbit have can communicate more easily. The only thing missing would be to create very high antenna around the planet. but it is not possible unfortunately.

  • Scott Manley I wish did show at least how you went about deploying the subsequent satellites on this mission. Whenever I build a ship carrying multiple satellites once I’ve detached the first then I can no longer do any burns without sending the ship in uncontrollable spins. Does anyone know where I can find advice about this? I’ve tried googling but haven’t found much except another vid where a guy explains how he gets into orbit and then brings down periapse to a particular altitude in order to be at a certain position offset from the previous one by time getting back to apoapse but he also had no problem burning with uneven ship :/

  • Why do people not like Bible readings? I mean, seriously, it’s a book. It could be a good read. After all, if I had the time, I would read it. I never had read much of it to be honest. But, it’s like many other books. The belief that it’s fiction or fact is what being Christian or not being Christian is. So, people who don’t like the Bible, give it a read some day. Doesn’t matter if you aren’t Christian at all, it could be a very good read for many.
