However, travel insurance typically does not cover expenses related to an expired passport.

Standard travel insurance policies do not provide coverage if you have not received your passport before your scheduled trip departure. However, they do cover vacation losses if you arrive late at the airport.

In summary, travel insurance does not cover any costs associated with invalid or expired passports. It is the traveler’s responsibility to ensure that their passport is valid for the entire trip and to renew it well in advance if necessary.

  • My daughter, aged 9, holds a British passport that expires on the 22nd October, 2022. I reside with my family in Jordan and we are planning to visit Austria for tourism on the 25th June returning on the 9th July, 2022. I am aware that there should be at least 3 months till the expiry date from the time we leave Jordan on the 25th June, however, the recommendation that the passport be valid for at least 6 months from the date of departure from Austria i.e. the 9th of July, is a little concerning. Should I not worry considering it is a recommendation and not a requirement? Please advise.
