Does The Earthquake Harm Tourism In Turkey?

Istanbul, Turkey’s cultural hub and a leading travel destination, has been hosting displaced survivors of the recent earthquake in its Antalya hotels. The earthquakes occurred along the East Anatolian Fault, which extends northeast from the country. Approximately 10 Turkish provinces were affected by the quake, with the impact felt across the region. Turkish authorities encourage tourists to keep visiting, despite the devastating earthquakes that struck the southeast of the country.

Turkey is one of the affected areas, with Adana, Adiyaman, Diyarbakir, Gaziantep, Hatay, Kahramanmaras, Kilis, Malatya, Osmaniye, and Sanliurfa being among the affected areas. The massive disaster raised questions about earthquake preparedness in Istanbul, Turkey’s business and tourism capital hosting around 16 million people. As the busy summer travel season approaches, Turkey’s tourism industry is struggling to recover from the devastating earthquakes that impacted the country in February and killed more than 50,000 people.

However, it is worth noting that the disaster zone makes up only a fraction of Türkiye’s overall land mass, meaning most of the country is safe. After the earthquake, tourism decreased in the Antalya region, and the sadness that people felt naturally reduced their work considerably. Cappadocia is just a few hours drive from the worst earthquake-affected areas. In conclusion, Turkey remains a safe and captivating destination for travelers in 2023, despite the recent earthquake in the eastern region.

  • It is calculated that the probability of an earthquake of 7.2 or higher in Istanbul by 2030 is 80%. 20 million people live in Istanbul. Since there is an earthquake, the loss of life can reach up to 1 million. Istanbul earthquake will be one of the biggest disasters in the history of the world with its human and economic losses. It is now too late to change this and there is almost nothing that can be done. The south coast of Istanbul is very vulnerable to earthquakes and buildings built before 1999 were not built to withstand an earthquake at 7.2 sides. Hundreds of thousands of buildings will be demolished. After the earthquake, most of the main roads will be blocked due to the earthquake or traffic, and entry and exit from most parts of the city will be impossible. Electricity, water, sewerage, internet infrastructures will collapse in the city and food and water will not be distributed to the city. Even if all aid organizations in the world are mobilized, this is not possible in the first 72 hours, the next 72 hours or later. The only solution for the evacuation of people in the city may be to evacuate the city on foot. This will be a terrible tragedy and may be one of the closest apocalyptic things the world has ever experienced. It will take more than a year to rebuild the infrastructure in many parts of Istanbul, demolish the damaged buildings and remove the debris. It will not be possible for me to live in Istanbul during this time. The region will probably be evacuated for security reasons.

  • To be honest, now it is too late for a urban renewal. I think a foreigner or Turkish person who doesnt live in İistanbul doesnt understand real situation in İstanbul. Maybe İstanbul is most complicated big city in world. Earthquake is so close, however urban renewal still is far away from enough. Considering national interest of Turkey such as economy and national security and surely life of people, İstanbul had to been evacuated immediately. Goverment has to encourage companies to transfer their hqs to other cities. In additon to these, goverment has to encourage İstanbul people to move to other cities and surely, it requires master plans and operational plans. Somehow, İstanbul population has to reduce. By the way, company plazas which will be evacuated can be used as housing. Also, remote working is very important and useful for evacuating of İstanbul.

  • For those visiting or living in Turkey – the whole country is an earthquake zone. Scientists continue to warn that at any moment at any spot a devastating earthquake can happen. For Istanbul, this was known for decades. In 1999 (devastating earthquake nearby with ‘only’ 1000 deaths in Istanbul) the city’s population was 8 million. Now the next one is up and the city has 20+ million people. So those who can, please please please leave the city. Even if you survive in Nisantasi, Etiler or Kadıköy, you will not be able to leave, there’ll be total devastation surrounding every spot, raging fires, no water, electricity, no food, no help from anyone. If you can’t leave, please contact your government and remind them of the dangers. Obviously try to follow local guidelines and emergency personnel, but we need help from other countries now before it’s too late. 😢

  • The deaths from the Earthquake in February must be over 100000. Since 270000 buildings were destroyed and in vast majority of them were whole families living. Now imagine a city like Istanbul with thousands of buildings and 10 million people being packed in one area. The results of an earthquake there, will be absolutely devastating and a huge humanitarian catastrophe. Horrifying…

  • As in the summer 2023, the majority Tirkye people are preoccupied with their “negative” opinions on economy. They are not interested in taking precautions against natural and man-made catastrophes. Prepare emergency supply bags, practise emergency drills regularly, and forget about wasting time politicking.

  • As a Turk living in Istanbul, nothing scares me more than a possible Marmara earthquake. It will be one of the biggest disasters in history, more than 20 million people will lose their lives, millions of buildings will collapse and millions of people will be buried under rubble. Our government does not take any precautions. We also saw in the extremely effective February 2023 earthquake that no precautions were taken before the earthquake, and sufficient assistance was not provided after the earthquake. 1 year has passed since the 2023 earthquake and there are still people whose bodies have not been recovered. I lost some of my closest friends in that earthquake and two of them don’t even have a grave. One of my friends who died had claustrophobia and asthma, and it takes my breath away to think about how much he suffered until the end. I miss you guys. I hope you didn’t suffer too much. We do not forget you, we keep you alive in our hearts.

  • Seismic isolation isn’t the solution for regular buildings such as residential buildings. But for regular buildings life safety isn’t the only level of earthquake safety. In Turkey there are some parts of country which are waiting for immediate earthquakes. For the buildings in those zones can be chosen the immediate usage level.

  • well sadly the current corrupt government will never do anything about this, because thats how their rule will end. think of it as the disaster that will wake people up from the bad government they have, sometimes you need a huge wakeup call in order to cleanse. “you always need a war to start over in peace” forgot who said that.

  • FEARFUL? “But the fearful, and unbelieving, and the abominable, and murderers, and whoremongers, and sorcerers, and idolaters, and all liars, shall have their part in the lake which burneth with fire and brimstone: which is the second death.” Revelation 21:8! BELOVED! PLEASE DON’T DIE WITHOUT JESUS IN YOUR HEART! ST JOHN 3:16! ❤️ SOULS LIVE FOREVER…WITH OR WITHOUT JESUS. NOTHING ELSE MATTERS.
