📹 Sheetz – Expanding Near You?
Episode Description: Sheetz is a growing convenience store chain that may eventually expand into your area. This video outlines …
I’ve been with Sheetz for the past 6 years now. I love the fact that they go the extra mile to make sure all of their employees are well taken care of. From the great starting pay, to frequently promoting staff, amazing health benefits, 401k, multiple bonus pays; and that’s not even scratching the surface. Another aspect I love is a slogan that most customers don’t know about. We call it “TCF” which stands for “Total Customer Focus”. As the company takes care of the employees, the employees make sure to give just as much care of the customers.
I’m a Canadian who loves to travel into the US for Amusement Parks and Sheetz is literally my heaven. My family literally calls it’s territory “Sheetz Country” and it’s used as a bargaining tool to make trips happen. The food is always so good and so cheap, their Fries are always so fresh and their hot dogs are cheap and delicious, plus since it’s like every other American gas station, there are fountain drinks and snacks too! Their menu is endless and we find something new every visit, we really really hope they expand into some border states with Ontario, like NY and MI, and then expand into Canada cause I think Canadians would eat this up, since Circle K expanded into Canada recently and has started offering Food and Fountain drinks, a market only captured by 7-Eleven. Canada needs Sheetz, Canada will embrace Sheetz!
I am from Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania – AND I LOVE SHEETZ. When I am having a bad day at work, I daydream about a Sheetz run. There are billboards everywhere here that say “Sheetz run & done!”. When Pennsylvania transitioned to electronic voting machines, I explained to nervous co-workers that voting is now just like ordering a sandwich at Sheetz. Because EVERYONE here knows how to order food at Sheetz. If they’re expanding, that is awesome.
Living in Virginia, they are pretty popular here. Although liquor sales won’t happen anytime soon, but they still have the Beer Cave. 2 more things I think also help them: -Gas prices, like Wawa they tend to sell gas at a lower price than traditional gas stations. That draws in more customers who are also more likely to get food since they have a reputation for good food. -Cleacln bathrooms, again like Wawa they try to keep the bathrooms nice. So, if you feel the need to go, you’re a lot more likely to pick Sheetz over any other place because you can expect a clean bathroom.
I became a sheetz fan just last year. I was on a long distance motorcycle trip through the mid Atlantic region in late September. We had several days of crap weather, cold, rainy and wet. We stopped at a sheetz late one afternoon after riding through mud, rain and trash all day. Walking into sheetz and finding out I could order a hot meal and warm up inside was like being brought back from the dead. I’m glad they are expanding down into Ohio closer to me. I stop at Sheetz now any time I’m road tripping and have the opportunity.
I will always be a diehard Sheetz freak! I grew up in PA perusal Sheetz evolve into what it is today. Worked there in high school and college. Now I stop in every chance I get on road trips since I no longer live near any Sheetz. I heard Wawa is coming to my neighborhood. I’m not mad, but I’ll pretend to be! What a thorough and excellent article recap of one of my favorite companies. Thank you, Company Man! ❤🌭🥪🍟🤘🏼:finger-red-number-one:
Originally from Altoona, PA and so I grew up with Sheetz and I can assure you that the term “sheetz run” is an actual colloquialism. You go to a late movie and you want some real snacks and to talk about it… you do a Sheetz run and then in the late 00s when you could sit down and eat it was just such a chill spot.
Sheetz is absolutely a staple for us when we go on road trips here in SWPA. The food is great, the convenience store selection is really good and often includes harder to find items that meet dietary restrictions like Dole Whip, and notably has some of the cleanest restrooms you’ll find almost anywhere in the States. Definitely recommend!
Im in a weird part of PA generally referred to as North East Central Pennsylvania. Its not very far past the larger area where the Sheetz end and the Wawas begin. I grew up around them, and they actually have super good planning as to where they put them. Like I just ate there today because I had an appointment at a smaller hospital and they have one right across the street. They also have them near highways and the like, very much places where gas, food, and stop breaks are needed. The food is decent! Most of it is nothing super amazing and some of it is kinda bad, but its usually down to how a location does things and how good the individual employees are. But the drinks are always pretty nice. The pay is really good, they have a very high pay relative to similar positions elsewhere. Sometimes management can be kind of crap, leaving sometimes only 2 employees to run the entire store, including food and register, which even for night shift usually isn’t enough. The bathrooms are usually super clean, they often have deals going, and their rewards program is super good. I love sheetz, i love having them around, and they’ve been a good thing to have around.
Back when I visited my ex in Pennsylvania around nine years or so ago, she told me about this place called Sheetz that was a gas station that also served food. I thought every gas station served food. She said no, this one makes fresh food when you order it. I wasn’t expecting much. Just the greasy, old tasting food that most gas stations served. But no, theirs was wonderful! And it proved useful when we got snowed in. I had no idea such a place existed! I’d be thrilled if it made its way over here.
My wife, daughter, and I moved from western NY to Erie PA in 2014. A decade later we’ll drive right past most places to go to Sheetz. Love the food, the atmosphere, and the friendly staff. We live in NY afain, for now, but when we visit the kids in Cleveland, we always stop at Sheetz on the way out, or back. Kind of jealous at the moment, as I’m typing this post op at Cleveland Clinic. Now I’m a double amputee, and each time my wife has come to see me, she stops at Sheetz. And I’m eating hospital food. Going home Monday. Forst stop will be to get 2 dogs, totz, and a diet dew. Thank you for the article Kid. And for the smile pn my face. Been a hard week, and you helped make it a littoe better.
Texas fella here that went to college in Pittsburgh in the early 2000s and dare I say, I miss Sheetz and one of the places I STILL talk about to this day! (That and Eat N’ Park—sorry if I spelled it wrong, lol). I remember seeing the touchscreens become more relevant now and I tell people, “I remember when…” Lol, This reads as old as I feel, but still pretty cool! Now, I need to watch the article on WaWa, because I don’t think I saw one in my time there.
I’m in the newly expanding area of Dayton, OH and this has me very intrigued. As a full-time DoorDasher, it’s tough to eat good on the road with all the fast food joints here and I’ve been seeing the Sheetz stores opening but without much thought into looking, gonna have to try when I get my lunchbreak one day
It makes my day that you’re covering Sheetz. I’ve been a Sheetz customer for a long time. I got to see them slowly take over central PA in the 2000s and 2010s. Always liked going there. I go there at least twice a week for my gas and drinkz (It’s infectious, I tell you). Them and Rutter’s are big names here. Both of them have a solid hot food selection, but Sheetz is better known for it with their MTO have been out for a long time. (I had no idea it’s been out since the 80s!). Royal Farms is another convenience store with food that seems to be up and coming around here. Their specialty is their fried chicken. I recommend Sheetz chicken tenders and mozzarella sticks. Oh, and their milkshakes. I walked an hour to and from in a blizzard just for their curly fries and milkshake.
From experience: Sheetz is the best. I am a diehard backer of them! I go there exclusively for gas, food, drinks etc and have been for as long as I can remember. Their MTO system is amazing, and I know I can go there to get good food every time. Their rewards app is great, their workers are nice, and they never disappoint. I remember getting the wraps they sell in 2014, and I still get the same one to this day. They’re just unbeatable, to the point I go there almost daily and I can’t see going elsewhere. I love Sheetz and only hope that they continue to grow!
Sheetz moved into my central PA town back in the mid 90s. It was nothing like any other convenience store in our area. We had a Turkey Hill for ages, but once Sheetz moved in, more people went there overall. They were a great spot for cheap pizzas back then and it helped fuel my high school’s band during band camp on many occasions. They moved to the area I live in now in NEPA not long after I moved here, and have been my go-to place for gas and food.
A friend of mine was a fuel delivery driver for Sheetz. They are required to keep their trucks in great clean standards at all times. You won’t see a dirty Sheetz rig on the road. With Sheetz being 247-365 they are always open, it’s a great place for me and my automotive friends to grab some food and utilize their outside eating tables at 1am. They literally have everything on the menu. They are social media active and always a friendly place. The company I work for currently has fleet fueling through Sheetz. It’s a very large part to our community in Pennsylvania. We love Wawa and we love Sheetz. Can’t beat the 2 for $1.00 hot dogz even when the price goes up around us they stay the same. Thank you company man for doing this episode. I hope it inspires someone to travel to one of our locations to try it out!
As a resident of Columbus Ohio I can happily say I love Sheetz I first had them a few years back while visiting Pennsylvania, I had never heard of them before but I needed a late night bite to eat. They have great food, and the milkshake was especially good. I found myself wishing there was a Sheetz where I lived… AND MY WISH CAME TRUE I was was excited when I heard they were expanding into Ohio. And now there’s at least 2 within reasonable distance from my home to my college. I usually go at least once a week. It’s popular at my school too. Anyway I really recommend they shakes, honestly one of the best shakes I’ve ever had.
Sheetz has a huge space in my heart, oddly, because it was an oasis for when I used to travel with my band in college. We were based in Pittsburgh, and I always loved to pull up to one when we’d got to play a show. I’ve noticed it expanding and came to see if you’d covered it, and lo and behold, here it is! Thanks for the coverage! It’s inspiring to hear they’re such a good company.
Going on long road trips across PA with a family of little kids made me appreciate Sheetz. I live near plenty of them but don’t frequent them too often. On a long trip with kids, the food selection, the clean bathrooms (a must with little kids), and gas at a competitive price were winners. I still remember that exits 120, 97, and 78 on I-80 have Sheetz at them. If they had Top Tier gas like Rutters and Costco it would be game, set, match.
I have been working at Sheetz for about 2 years and it is the best experience of my life. They pay employees 20-75k to move locations to make sure there new stores are successful. They pay high level management six figures which is achievable to every employee. I highly recommend the company and I’m guessing we will be growing very quickly. If anyone has any questions about the company, let me know.
Here in NC Sheetz is one of the few gas station chains that are guaranteed to have easily accessible, multi-stall bathrooms for road trips. Many others just have a 1 person at a time or employee key to get in. Sheetz is kinda the McDonalds of gas stations in that you get a pretty consistent experience.
Super exciting watch from PA 🙂 Never realized I’d never ordered from Sheetz without a touch screen for as long as I can remember. They were also way ahead of the curve when it came to mobile ordering and rewards systems too. Where I’m from in suburban eastern PA, they’re always packed and they’re one of three PA chains I’ll fuel from. They even knock down the price of standard fuel for holidays and even just because when prices start soaring- out of their own pockets which I think is super cool. Never knew they fought against PA liquor laws either, which are super weird. Sheetz is the best place to grab anything past 11PM here, when liquor sales are prohibited generally everywhere else. The food is up to par with competing chains and you can still get combos for suuuper cheap if you need. Sheetz>Wawa
I have not had Wawa’s yet but I went to Sheetz when I visited my brother. I have never in my life said I’m willing to walk 15 minutes one way to get a cup of coffee in the morning till I had Sheetz coffee. Employees were beyond friendly and could tell I wasn’t from there. One of them even helped out with what I wanted and what I was looking for.
I live in Alabama so I’ve never experienced Sheetz or Wawa. We do have a handful of Bucee’s, all conveniently located on interstate exits near state lines. I-10 east near Florida, I-85 north near Georgia, I-20 East near Georgia, and I-65 north near Tennessee. I love the idea of a convenience store that over delivers!
Previously worked at Sheetz as a night shift employee then a supervisor in 2020 – 2022! They just seem to hire sociable employees I’ve worked at places where everyone kinda minds their own business and goes home but Sheetz seems to hire people that like to chat and talk. I’ve heard horror stories from different stores about crappy employees, or employees who squabble, I myself was present for the firing of a few employees for work place disputes but I think all and all it’s a pretty friendly group!
I’m from a town over from Altoona PA and have worked with Sheetz 4 Kids through my high school! They are a great company and truly everyone I know that works for them, upper management or store employee, likes their job and gets great benefits. They have expanded on all of their local locations, demolishing the previous Sheetz’ and then placing a bigger, better Sheetz in their spot. Sheetz has been the town hangout and sitting “behind Sheetz” is what we do in our small towns. When I was a baby I didn’t know there were other gas stations, lol.
I moved to Winchester, VA in 1985 from further south in Virginia. Winchester is the northernmost city in Virginia and Maryland and Pennsylvania are literally minutes away. In 1986 we stopped at a Sheetz in Williamsport Maryland and it was basically a 7-11 clone. Not too long after that I heard about them taking surveys asking customers what they would like to see in the stores. It wasn’t too long before they built a couple of much larger stores with the new logos and stuff and they were quite an improvement over the older stores. Before too long they built on in Winchester and added the MTO menus and things really took off. I’ve lost count of how many are in Winchester and over the years they spread south. My wife and I used to ride a sidecar motorcycle on the secondary roads down the Shenandoah valley and we could count on Sheetz for a good stopping point for fuel and hydration. The food is an excellent value for the money. The bread on the subs could be better but there is always something with every business like that. My wife passed last year and I’ve lost my mobility so I haven’t been in a Sheetz for a while but I still recommend them to any friends looking for fuel or food.
I live in a part of Maryland where Royal Farms dominates the area, and the closest Sheetz to me is an hour west. Several times heading through west Maryland usually somewhere into Pennsylvania just beyond the state border, my planned route always includes several Sheetz along the way. Stopping at Sheetz is something that I look forward to as a part of long distance travel.
As a Pittsburgher, I’ve been going to Sheetz for a long time. As for the Wawa rivalry, Wawa is certainly good but it’s hundreds of miles away. There isn’t much overlap in their territory. Whenever I’m in another state (except for ones with Sheetz or Wawa), I do miss that they’re not around as most areas don’t have anything quite the same. It seems like they can both keep expanding successfully.
Delaware Valley/ suburban Philly guy who’s spent his life living here on both sides of the river so yeah I’m a Wawa guy. My mom even worked at a Wawa once. But I go to Gettysburg a few times a year though so I’ve been in Sheetz too. It’s good. I wonder if there’s some secret deal between Wawa and Sheetz that gives the I-95 corridor to Wawa and allows Sheetz to expand anywhere west of it.
Here are some random experiences I’ve had with Sheetz. I spent my highschool years in PA. We got a Sheetz back in the late 90s. One thing they did to attract new customers was give away free coffee for months after they first opened. It ended up becoming a local hangout spot for teens. Sheetz also tends to have the cheapest gas around. I’ve always heard rumors that “Sheetz gas is bad” but it’s nonsense. It’s a loss-leader for them, but it definitely gets me in for some MTO (Made-to-order). Going into Sheetz is always a feel-good feeling for me, so I’ll usually get at least a bag of chips. One does not simply get gas at Sheetz. People would always say “I’m going to shitz” making fun of the similarity to how the name sounds. They fully embraced it, I’ve seen billboards that say “Get yo’ Sheetz” or something to that effect. Every time I go back to PA, I make sure to make a stop and get me some MTO . They’re one of my favorite spots and have been since I first visited one all those years back. BTW, Turkey Hill is another PA gas station / dairy shop you could do a article on.
Grew up with Sheetz – the only place in town to get something to eat after dark. Love them! When i moved to Maryland for a brief time the nearest Sheetz was over an hour away. When we were homesick, we would take the drive just for a few hotdogs 😂 But then they took tator tots off the menu…..the tator tot platter was my favorite! 💔
I had a project where I had to live in a small isolated town for 6 months. Even though there was a McDonalds, Sheetz was the restaurant of choice almost every time. I had breakfast and lunch there almost every day, I saw entire Little League teams come in for lunch. One note, another copy of the format in New Jersey called QuickCheck. They have similar made to order sandwiches and touch screens.
Lived all over Maryland in the last few years. I was working a blue collar job north of Baltimore for a while (this might be a little TOO revealing since there is only 1 or 2 Sheetz up that way) but I instantly fell in love with the place. The food was cheap and good and fast, the rare trinity. (It was NOT healthy though hahaha) I don’t work up that way anymore, so I hope they start bringing some to central MD and Baltimore city.
I work at Sheetz and I can say it’s been the best of the handful of jobs I’ve worked. It’s got half decent pay with good hours and most management in most stores genuinely care about their employees in a way that still surprises me from the sheer amount of bad experiences I’ve had working for other fast food places. I would recommend it even if I didn’t work there, honest!
From Central PA myself. I travel around the state as part of my job and it’s not unusual for me to stop at 2-3 different Sheetz stores during the day (Today it was Lititz, Duncannon, State College, and back to Lititz to fill up again). The biggest thing I can say about Sheetz locations is that they are clean, especially the bathrooms. You pretty much know that if you gotta make a stop, the Sheetz isn’t going to have something funky to deal with, even if you just need to wash your hands. Most locations have long-term employees, instead of there being someone different working at most other convenience stores in my area. MTO is pretty good, too. It’s been a go-to for me for years when I’m on the run. As far as Wawa goes…there just aren’t many in the area I live or travel to for work. There are a few near where my parents live in Douglassville, and they’re decent enough stores, but I prefer Sheetz.
are used to work at Sheetz and it was genuinely the best job I’ve ever had. Even at 16 they paid me extremely well, they always give me breaks (unlike other employers), and they prevented me from having to continue working for my mom’s company 😅 their kitchens are always super clean, there’s a great company culture, and I feel like it’s one of the only gas stations where you can feel confident eating anything they make
I was first introduced to Sheetz when they first entered the SW West Virginia market and have been a fan ever since. I’ve missed them since moving to Florida years ago but their competitor Wawa is currently making a big expansion here so I may turn into a Wawa fan although I still order Sheetz coffee from their online store to serve at home since they have the best coffee I’ve had.
I’d never been to Sheetz until I moved to Pittsburgh (where for bizarre reasons we don’t have any in the city limits, only in the suburbs), but I can’t believe I’d been missing out all my life. Great stores, always open, and food better than most regular fast food chains. They’re no Bucee’s, but they don’t try to be. They’re everywhere and easy to get in and out of, and they never have long lines.
I’m not a religious user of Sheetz as a guy that lives in DC, but I do use them during road trips. As to the Wawa versus Sheetz debate, I actually encountered Wawa first as a convenience store in Philly. My first Sheetz encounters was as a gas station in Virginia. There is a Wawa in DC, but I don’t go out of my way to get there. Sheetz, I just go there for a fill up when I road trip over Wawa.
Speaking as a Virginian and a trucker, Sheetz had been a pretty regular stop for me in regular life because of the made to order food, and the only reason I don’t go more these days is because their locations are not exactly big-truck friendly. Even considering just the locations with diesel fuel lanes, most don’t have parking for big trucks, although they seem to be open to expanding that as more locations open. The made to order food is generally at an acceptable quality level for being cheaper than comparable fast food, and being gas stations along regular driving routes for normal people removes the need to be intentional about deciding where else you want to eat, especially if you’re already putting gas into the car. And with most fast food places and even other convenience stores having moved away from 24hr operation during the pandemic, yeah, being open in that critical time window between 11pm and 6am matters a lot more now. I think they’ve got what it takes to expand super-regionally and even nationally. They seem to take quality seriously without trying to truly compete with the restaurant experience, and while I personally have the misfortune that some of their ingredients and prep seem tailor made to make me unable to eat a few of their offerings I would otherwise want to order, that hasn’t stopped me from regularly stopping at Sheetz to grab food on the regular.
I remember when Sheetz entered my local market about 20-25 years ago. The first location I was aware of put the two gas station/convenience stores that were within a block of their location out of business within a year. Which is fair. Sheetz brought the competition and those stores simply could not compete. Sheetz are one of the few businesses to stay 24/7 since the lockdowns and, being a day sleeper, I appreciate that.
I had visited USA last year and their I spent my time in Pennsylvania, Dulles Virginia, Ohio, NJ, Florida and Connecticut. Sheetz was indeed prominent in Pennsylvania and Virginia. Infact I got to visit their store twice and on one instance my cousin’s friend purchased jalapeno poppers and another time I purchased beer and mars bar.
I’m form WV, but there aren’t any Sheetz near when I live. Closest one is about an hour and a half away. When I was working in Morgantown, we would meet at Sheetz every morning before we headed out to our job site. Some have more to offer than others, but the two that were near me In Morgantown were fantastic.
We’ve had Sheetz in my area since the ’90s. Some of my earliest memories are going to Sheetz and placing orders on the CRT touch screens. It’s so cool to reflect on how far they’ve come. I really hope they don’t try to grow too quickly. They’ve always maintained high standards in their food and stores. Rapid expansion could ruin the Sheetz focus on customers and quality.
My family and I are all loyal Sheetz fans. We live in NC about an hour from 2 of them. We always look for them when traveling north to visit family. Their food is always fresh, delicious and is varied enough to fit everyone ‘s tastes. They have excellent subs, fries and onion rings! Their stores (including bathrooms) are also very clean, which is rare for a gas station. The workers are always friendly, which I guess makes sense when you see how much they pay them per hour (it’s listed in the store). I wish we had one in our town, as I would probably be a frequent shopper/diner on nights when my family is all working and I’m on my own for dinner…on second thought, maybe it is good that they aren’t closer! 😂
Sheetz recently opened a store close to where I live and it’s absolutely become my favorite gas station in just a few trips. Their app is what e-commerce should be and their gas is high quality. As a night shift worker, they’re also a godsend for a hot meal when literally everything else is closed or serving breakfast only.
I’m a Sheetz guy mostly because that was the main gas station in the areas where I grew up and have lived most of my life (including a half dozen years in Altoona). I remember my Dad smoking Jacks when I was a kid, I had no idea that was just a Sheetz thing. As for their food, I like it, though I think a fair comparison would be fast food places rather than the standard convenience store. As far as how it measures up to places like KFC, McDonalds, etc., you obviously get the food slower (made to order), the prices are close but slightly more expensive, there is less seating if you actually want to sit and eat, and there’s a constant stream of folks in and out. But like I said I do like the food, and it has options you might not easily find at a lot of the other competitors nearby
I grew up in WV so I’m a fully fledged Sheetz fanatic, and I miss their frozen hot chocolates every day. I’ve had multiple friends who worked for Sheetz and they generally didn’t have much bad to say about actually working there, just about the run of the mill stupidity of customers. When I briefly lived in rural WV, the local Sheetz was the hang out spot for folks in the town. Had a huge seating area and all that jazz. When I was driving cross country from Seattle WA to western CT, I took quite a few naps in Sheetz parking lots too, because they’re 24/7 and generally not sketchy. Great chain.
As a truck driver, I think you forgot to mention a few very important factors. 1. They always have the best diesel prices. In average, a truck fuels about 200 gallons of diesel 2. They have big and clean parking spots. 3. You’re right. food is much better than at any other truck stop. Driving a semi truck makes it difficult to stop and buy good coffee, which makes sheetz on of best locations to stop to get a coffee.
I travel from the west coast to the east coast for work fairly often and have since 2013. I would always go to WaWa. In 2021, my friend convinced me to go to Sheetz instead. I walked in and ordered a sandwich. I ordered it with guacamole. You pay a little extra for the guacamole, of course. When the worker made the sandwich, she piled and piled the guacamole on. It was falling out. I certainly felt like they gave me my money’s worth. I’m used to paying the extra dollar and getting a little scrape of it. That was my first experience with Sheetz, and it was definitely positive. I do like both chains and will go to either. I’m not from PA and so I suppose it’s okay to like both. I have no dog in the fight.
I used to work at Sheetz in the early 2000s it was my first job and they paid a pretty good wage I was only a high school kid but I made more than my friends. I also remember the salmonella in 2004 our MTO sales dipped slightly at our store but most people just avoided the tomatoes. I had a good 4 years there I still think about the people I worked with and my regular customers overall it was a great experience for a first job.
My home town got a sheets a while ago- sheetz is the ONLY store in that town past 9 and one of 2 that sell alcohol. This has made them the defacto gas station there and nobody even considers going to BP. They also did a thing this year where they made the gas 1.776 on the Fourth of July. First time I ever saw a traffic jam in that town. I should also mention as a fun fact that it was so difficult in that town to get a liquor license that took longer than expected and so they made the fridge and then couldn’t sell beer, so they called it the “soda cave” for a while. Also did you get a new mic? Your audio sounds so crisp.
I love Sheetz. I had one when I lived in Ohio. They placed it in front of the college so it was busy all day during the day for normal traffic then all night bc of the college. I loved the MTO food. but now I live in Mississippi and it’s been rough not having one but gas stations down here sell fresh food that actually is really good.
I’m a Sheetz super customer. I get all of my gas and lunches and breakfasts during the work week at Sheetz. Some other things that make their expansion so impressive is 1. They’ve taken the Domino’s approach to their offerings. When you go to order something online or through their on-screen presence in the store, the thought and effort that went into the user interface is apparent. In that vein, they’re kind of like dominoes with their approach towards IT. The other part of their ridiculous expansion is their construction team. New stores go up in a matter of weeks. I don’t think it’s prefab construction but it’s something awfully close to it. The frequent customer program rocks. I get my gourmet coffee for a $1. SHEETZ Is a pretty good deal for working folks.
I’ve lived in Pittsburgh my whole life, and Sheetz is part of the culture. There are usually multiple locations in or near every town in the area, and they’re constantly building more. They have a big menu and it’s easily my go-to for fast food. I’d say one of the other big reasons they’re growing fast is because they’re open 24/7/365, unlike a lot of other stores and restaurants. Sheetz is also renovating a lot of stores to make them more restaurant-focused with drive throughs and larger dine-in areas.
I love Sheetz MTO. I used to live in western PA and I went to Sheetz quite often. Now any time I travel back to PA, Sheetz is a must-visit. Yes, a gas station is a must-visit, for the food! I now live in AZ. The closest thing to Sheetz is QT. While I like some food at QT, it is not Sheetz level of quality. I think Sheetz would have a lot of entrenched competition in AZ: QT, 7-11, Speedway, Maverick, Etc. But if they ever come to AZ, I would be a customer.
Grew up in Western MD. Practically cooked on Sheetz. Also – Company Man – the Mid Atlantic is a hot spot for these types of stores for some reason. Sheetz, Wawa, now Royal Farms is growing like crazy… and there are other local brands that have grown like Dash In that compete. I’d be fascinated to see a article exploring this.
I was just there earlier tonight. I like the atmosphere and it being family owned makes it feel more inviting. The food isn’t the best around but it’s decent and more importantly cheap compared to fast food. I don’t really have anything bad to say, the one I visit in Akron is always packed with people. Sheetz is a staple around here 🙂
I live in Florida where Wawa has been been making inroads over the last decade, but I’ve also been to a few Sheetz in VA and WV while on vacation during that time. I’d put Wawa ahead of Sheetz, but Sheetz ahead of Racetrac which is also in that “supersized 7-Eleven” category. Admittedly, I don’t got to any of those three places for their sandwiches. I’d take any of those three over Buckees, whose locations are so big and so busy as to make me want to avoid them, no matter the quality of service.
Another amazing family owned Company you should look at is Crown Lift Trucks. I know it’s not flashy or glamorous, but they are family owned based in Ohio and are 4th in the world in Lift Truck market share. What’s amazing about that is its all organic growth, not take overs or buyouts of other manufacturers like the other companies that sell and manufactuer forklifts.
As a temporarily-mis-placed Pennsylvanian who is currently in Florida, I am happy that we have Wawa down here, but I have always been more of a Sheetz fan. I remember getting a $5 bill to put gas in my old car, and sneaking $1 of it to get a pack of Jacks (I haven’t smoked in almost a decade, but I was a rebellious teen). I just always felt the food was better at Sheetz than at Wawa, and some of the stores had a better environment. Either way, I think more of the country could use Sheetz, Wawa, Rutter’s, and even Royal Farms. That part of the country is great for convenience stores and all-night road trips.
I’m in northwestern Pennsylvania and Sheetz are all over the place. I’ve heard of Wawa, but never actually seen a store, and didn’t know they were a competitor to Sheetz until this article. I’ve generally had a good experience with Sheetz, although I do think some of their menu changes in the last couple of years have been a miss. Other than that though, they’re my go-to gas station and a good place to stop for a quick snack or meal.
I grew up in Sheetz/Wawa territory in Virginia. I’m neutral on the feud–I like the subs and coffee at Wawa better, but the drink, snack, and fried foods at Sheetz better. Sheetz is honestly wild how much brand loyalty they get, but honestly? If one moves into your neighborhood, give them a try… and get the fries, they’re so good.
Hey, Mike. If you’re reading this comment, I submitted this idea on your site: a comparison between Ruby’s Diner and Johnny Rockets. They possess similarities in states of founding, decades of founding, and the vibes they portray. At the same time, they also possess their differences. Ruby’s Diner is still privately owned and small while Johnny Rockets is franchised and all over the world(so to speak). Plus, Johnny Rockets and Friendly’s were both owned by Sun Capital Partners at one point, with John McGuire said to run both companies at the same time, though I think Johnny just ran Friendly’s. These days, Johnny Rockets is owned by FAT Brands, who also owns Hot Dog on a Stick and Round Table Pizza, among others.
I drive an EV and was introduced to Sheetz because I stopped to charge my car on a trip. Had a great lunch that was as good as any fast food place I’ve been to. I live in Central Ohio and yes they’ve been opening up everywhere around here. Since my trip I’ve been back multiple times to my local locations for a quick bite. I have many friends from Western PA and only now do I understand why they’re so fond of what I thought was just a gas station
A Sheetz opened down the street from me on New Year’s Eve. The best thing about it is the free air pumps. There are now four gas station/convenience stores within a quarter mile of each other, three of them (including Sheetz) on the same corner. They all charge the same price for gas, but the others charge for air. Sheetz doesn’t. Guess where I go when I need to pump up a tire?
So let me break it down for those who don’t have Sheetz near them: I grew up in an area with Wawa and they are okay. Definitely better than the standard gas station. Then I moved states and discovered Sheetz. The gas is cheap, usually the cheapest in the area. Everything works, the vacuum, tire pump, and car wash, no matter what neighborhood it’s in. I live in the hood and they are the only station that manages to keep things running. The food selection is large and very customizable and it’s also cheaper and fresher than fast food. Also faster than fast food. The convenience store has great options for both typical American snacks but also a lot of Mexican snacks and other international treats. Large drink selection. Very tasty slushes, with the lowest one only being 0.99$. Amazing as a construction worker in the South. The bathrooms are always clean and they have enough of them so you don’t have to wait. A mix of self checkout and normal checkout app is you’re only grabbing one thing you can go fast. Also a lot of them are 24 hour operations so no matter the time you can always get what you need. Working in construction, Sheetz is the shining beacon between job sites where you can fill up, go to the bathroom, get good food cheap and fast, and take care of your truck at the same time. Even if it’s after your 3am concrete pour. I am a Sheetz believer 100%, especially after visiting home and going to a Wawa again and seeing how little competition they offer in 2024.
I’m from Dayton, Ohio and 3 Sheetz have magically popped up locally, after the recent Casey’s explosion. Now we are becoming a battleground with a QuikTrip being constructed and a much anticipated Bucci’s being constructed, as I am posting. There are positives’ and negatives to these changes like community backlashes contending crime issues and gas price drops in store opening, but I am a long time resident and besides March Madness, college basketball’s first four playoff games, I don’t understand, “why here in Dayton, Ohio. I will continue to watch it all unfold with our plethora of Speedways after the 7-Eleven franchise acquisition, and Marathon gas station’s recent resurgence and the fading convenience store from BP’s gas stations with the new competitions.
I think their expansion would work well because I live in VA and even though the area I live in doesnt have a sheetz, we have a lot of Wawas. I work at the shipyard in Newport News and come in contact with alot of Navy people from all over the US and though they dont necessarily enjoy being here considering that when compared to Florida, Cali, Hawaii, and many other places to be stationed at, it can be rather boring. But the one thing they ALWAYS bring up about the area is how they wish Wawa would expand westward or into their hometowns. Being that Sheetz and Wawa are similar im sure they would feel the exact same about Sheetz! I wish them the best in their expansion as ill always root for a good family company and i hope to see them soon in Hampton Roads as well!
I miss Sheetz. I grew up in Elk County. The ones nearest to me are in Ridgway and St. Marys. There was also one in Johnsonburg, but I believe that closed in 2003. Not necessarily due to underperforming, but rather, the Sheetz model got too big for that location. Parking at the Johnsonburg store was also an accident just waiting to happen. I live in Phoenix, now. No regrets, more opportunities. The closest thing to Sheetz where I live is QT, which is actually pretty good in its own right. (Way better than Circle K, imo.) But I do miss Sheetz MTO. Also, we would even get their deli meats at Sheetz (Kunzler). You definitely paid more. But the quality was top notch.
Said it once in the wawa article and I will say it again… Sheetz>Wawa originally from NYC we only had crappy stores like 7/11 so traveling to new Jersey and Pennsylvania and come across Wawa was awesome it was and still is great but 7 years ago when I moved to Pennsylvania I discovered Sheetz and it’s just better in every way … Better environment seats to eat in much bigger menu bigger and cleaner bathroom. Overall I’m much happier with Sheetz but I still enjoy Wawa and rumors are they are putting a new one very close to my house… So I may be visiting it more considering the the closet Sheetz is 10 miles away
As a guy from PA, I prefer Sheetz over Wawa as they have more MTO options. However, I used to be a fan of their 2 for $4 breakfast burritos but since they either changed the ingredients or suppliers, it hasn’t been that well. Thankfully the Classic Sampler has always been an go-to option for me. Also, the Sheetz by my house offer Voodoo seasoning (which is amazing on the fries) and hope that other Sheetz offer that seasoning.
I prefer Sheetz. The fast food is better and the options are more varied. Unfortunately I live in a “Wawa Zone” so have to drive an hour if want to get to Sheetz territory. I wondered WHY Sheetz and Wawa don’t see to overlap territory much, but guess you’r article gives the reason that they try to “work together” to some degree. Interesting concept in business… similar to how a lot of craft breweries seem to work, sharing ideas and helping each other so both can be successful. What a concept!! Wish more things worked that way.
I feel like all 300 PA Sheetz are outside my front door. I’ve been to many Sheetz and Wawa and found the Wawas to be cleaner and with much much better food. I messaged Wawa and told them the reasons I prefer them over Sheetz and that they really needed to come to my immediate area. Three months later, Wawa announced they had plans to open three locations near me. I know it has nothing to do with my message to them but still I like to take the credit 😉
As a native sound of Pennsylvania, I have lived on both sides of the state. I grew up in Wawa country, but now live in Sheetz country. I have to say that Wawa has the better coffee and some limited items that you hit really hard. But as a whole, she, It’s has more to offer, and they have the hot nuts, which, in my opinion makes it better than Wawa.I think Lancaster is the only part of the state where you find both Wawa, sheets, and royal Farms all within a driving distance, but I could be wrong.
Moved up to Lancaster PA for 4 years and def got my fill of sheetz. Also, wawa of course and rudders as well. Then i got back to Florida and wawas were everywhere but no sheetz, yet. I preferred sheetz food but dont mind an occasional wawa hoagie. Lancaster and up along the Susquehanna is def sheetz all the way.
The biggest upside of Sheetz for me is their consistency among locations. Every Sheetz that I’ve been to has made to order food, restrooms, fountain drinks, coffee, donuts, etc. If I’m traveling I could stop at a Speedway, at a Shell, any gas station. I have no way of knowing if they are going to have food or a restroom if I’ve never been to that one. If there’s a Sheetz it will always be my safe option.
As a certified PA Luddite, Sheetz is great. I found it strange when I would travel to other parts of the country without a parallel. 7/11 doesn’t have the same level of food quality, food customization, and technology integration. GetGo has them beat in some ways, but you can always count on Sheetz. Plus, being 24/7 is so nice. I’ve been stuck late at night, on the road, with no meal a couple times and that bright ass red sign welcomed me with chicken tenders.
I feel like Sheetz will do great if they expand to the Midwest especially if they keep their expansion westward thru some of the most busiest expressways and toll roads like 80 90 94 75 and the new IH69 south of Indianapolis where there is that many fuel stops like Sheetz QT or truck stops like Loves Pilot or TA.
There are two more “convenience stores” I’d like to add to your radar… Out of Utah and feature in the Mountain West is Maverick. Much like the Sheetz and Wawa. In the South and making its way West, Texas and Arizona is Quik Trip (QT). Arizona is the only state where I’ve seen Mavericks and QTs in the same state. I live in Texas so Buccees is my goto, however they don’t have the corner side footprint a QTs has. Really do enjoy your YT post… Please keep up the good work.
I prefer Wawa, Rutter’s and QuickChek to Sheetz, but I’d heartily welcome a Sheetz coming to my area (Dutchess County). We don’t have much in the way of gas stations with a deli in them like those. There are QuickCheks across the river from us, but that’s a hike (and a toll). The ultimate would be to have Rutter’s (let alone Buc-ees) up here, but that’s never going to happen.
I love Sheetz. I stop at a Sheetz probably every day of my life. They are everywhere and I’m building these points lol. I think it’s an awesome company, their stuff is usually slightly more expensive than other gas stations, we call it the Sheetz tax. I used to work there and they hammer it into your head that it is a restaurant first, then a gas station. I’ve worked in several kitchens and Sheetz was by far the cleanest, they treat the employees well. It’s seriously a great place.
Grew up in York, PA, South of Harrisburg, and it is literally convenience store nirvana. Four major convenience store chains – not counting 7-Eleven – are have strong presences in or around that area: Rutters, Sheetz, Wawa, and Royal Farms. Sheetz is the largest player in that area with Rutters a close second. Wawas aren’t in York, but just across the river in Lancaster County. Royal Farms – and their wonderful fried chicken – migrated in about 10 or so years ago. Personally I prefer Rutters, then Wawa, then Sheetz. RoFo is the go-to place for chicken – better than KFC or Popeyes. You really can’t go wrong with any of the four. Sheetz is best for burgers and fries, Wawa for subs. Rutters had, by far, the best menu, best rewards program for fuel, and cleanest stores – and some have mini-casinos.
I absolutely love Sheetz. The food is better than just about any fast food you can think of, the selection of items in the store is always good, staying on top of trends, but no atm fees and things like their own bakery for donuts, their coffee being amazing and only $.99 once you buy a cup. I think when you think of Altoona, you might not see that it is a Pittsburgh suburb where Wawa is more Phili and East Coast in terms of appeal where Sheetz is pure Appalachia.
When I lived in South Jersey, I went to Wawa every morning for my coffee and often times, got lunch there too. I liked Wawa’s food, but after awhile, it loses it’s luster as you get used to it. When I moved to Central PA in 2006, Sheetz was new to me, and because it was new, I found it more appealing than Wawa. Now after 18 years living here, I will say I do miss Wawa at times. I’m not the biggest fan of Sheetz’s subs, but I do like a number of their food items, and I do stop there every work morning for my coffee, and I frequently get my gas there since It’s conveniently located. I really like the employees I’ve gotten to know over the years, many of whom will discount my coffee or even let me take it no charge. It’d be difficult to pick a favorite between Wawa and Sheets as they’re both good, but as with most anything, you can lose interest if you have something too often.
I’m from Pennsylvania, and I’m Team Sheetz. I just got breakfast from there this morning. I ordered my food from the touchscreen, picked up a beverage, and my food was ready by the time I was ready to pay. I was in there for less than five minutes. And their breakfast sandwiches are far superior (I think) to McDonald’s or Dunkin or any other fast food restaurants. I also enjoy Wawa, but Sheetz is my go-to. Rutter’s is trying to make headway, but I’m not sure how successful they will be. Same with Royal Farms from Maryland.
Pennsylvanian here. Sheetz is very much a part of our every day lives because they’re largely predictable. The layouts of most stores are the same, they largely sell the same products, the touch screens and coffee machines all work in a similar manner, and the bathrooms are fairly clean (at least compared to many gas stations). If you’re a Pennsylvania traveling two counties away, or another state over, you know what to expect when you stop at a Sheetz. They’ve really been able to shake off the whole “gas stations are gross” stigma.
