I remember the scene when Missy was missing Sheldon when he had gone away to stay with a family and she sent him message before sleeping. Next day she woke up and found that he had returned and was sleeping in his bed. She was so happy to see him that she jumped at him from her bed towards him for hug and he was like no hugging no hugging. It was cutest moment in this series.

I gotta admit this particular scene made me laugh so hard I was gasping. I’m married to the more socially normalized version on Sheldon… my husband couldn’t figure out why I was loosing it. He watched the scene with our middle child… (who is more like Sheldon… that child explained it… to my husband… then husband got it. Begrudgingly).
I like how George said that ots good to be able to look back at your younger self and think you were stupid/ignorant. It really does show strength. Thats all regret is and should be, it should never hold you back, and no one else should use it to hold you back either as they dont have that right. He should be a therapist as it would help people move on from the past and live on the present.
Sheldon’s dad didn’t measure up to his youth’s future idea of adulthood. An unplanned pregnancy, a dead end job, the sacrifices required of adulthood for his family derailed that fantasy. Now he works hard to provide for his family. He doesn’t understand his kids, he tries to teach his kids, but he always loves them success or failure. His marriage flounders, he makes mistakes, he dies before he can mend the pain he causes. Isn’t he every adult that tries, fails, and tries again and again. I know how it ends, but I still cheer on the average Joe who doesn’t dissert his responsibilities, loves his kids, and tries, in spite of obstacles, to be there.
It’s moments like this you really see this father and son, though vastly different in personalities, show moments of genuine love. George may not truky understand how clever Sheldon is, but he is thankful his son can help him with things like his taxes or finances, which he struggles with, and Sheldon is more than happy to do it, because it’s a challenge, and he does find it rewarding for more than just material gain. It’s an unconventional love, but it’s real.
Im currently struggling with my mistakes and I feel I can’t turn to anyone as I have built myself up in a way where if I fall back on anyone everyone will find out and lose thier respect, its an awful feeling but the wisdom of George Cooper is exactly what I needed to face each day. I gave myself a hard time yesterday and I believed myself calling myself a monster and even if I am a little I have to learn from it accept it and move on and learn from the actions and carry on the path I’ve fallen off and just accept the action I have done as my past and look forward to the positive
What I love about this series is that we saw in big bang theory what sheldon described and said about his young life it was either bad and weird in his eyes, but never got to see what he describes it. Only to discover it wasn’t that different from what we consider to be be somewhat a normal family and that HE was the one being different. Look at his dad, he’s just a struggling coach who’s just doing what he can do for his family and shows that he is a caring and wise father, where as his mother has had a bit of a control freak issue and used her religion far more personal then ever. I have to wonder what will happen later ok when we see George die and how it impacted the family then what big bang already showed.
interestingly, the chess looks quite solid, although a) i don’t think many players would consider 1. d4 as a “bold opening move” – it’s generally as safe and sound as it gets, and certainly less bold than the most popular 1. e4 b) knocking the King down to resign the game is a cliche. it does exist as a concept, but noone actually does that – maybe a 100 years ago. and even then, it wouldn’t be done in response to an actual checkmate. delivering a checkmate concludes the game by definition, at this point resigning is redundant and makes no sense (like announcing “i quit!” right after you got fired, or throwing in a towel after your boxer got KO’d and counted out 🙂 ) you may consider this nitpicky, but i think Sheldon would appreciate the argument 🙂
I really want to see the notation for that chess game. It looks like the Queen’s Gambit Declined, which is difficult as you often have NO idea what variation you are in until you are well into the opening. I really dislike Queen Pawn openings. Then again, I fear the Caro-Kann, which looks a bit stupid until you play against it. It took me long enough to get a hold of how the Sicilian works and the Caro-Kann only moves that Bishop pawn one space rather than two. If you don’t know this opening, black will destroy you.
I hate it when people claim that Sheldon’s parents never taught him that it was okay to make mistakes or that he wasn’t the center of attention all the time. They did, in fact, teach him these lessons. Often. The issue is he never processed them as such. His desire to be right, to function to his best benefit, outweighed the lessons they taught him.
It’s sad this is a very accurate representation of how you actually have to do your taxes. The government looks for any opportunity they can to screw you over. What’s even worse is they hate it when you figure out how to beat them at their own game. This is very bad for social economical growth. Because it turns taxes into a cat and mouse game. Which in turn keeps people from being financially successful. It’s really needs to stop and the IRS really needs to be abolished.
I did not get how IRB captured Sheldon’s queen with the knight at 1.40 but the queen still appeared on the board at f6 square. Plus, Sheldon captured the same piece after realizing that his dad is a teacher, but still, I see two white knights on the board. Besides, how can a knight from d5 can check the king on e8? 🙁
He would have made an awe inspiring accountant. I know, he was searching for miracles. He was searching for miracles until he found something or until his worthiness was shown to the people who could be equivalent to his brother and sister. He could have sued the butt off of many bad companies, he could at least help create defense for small companies or something if he was a lawyer. Dang… If someone could have made him willingly do community services at least.
he went for the “my dad’s a teacher, so i wasn’t working it was a lesson.” instead of the more obvious “i’m 7, therefore a minor, i can’t sign legally binding contracts, it can’t be qualified as work and the train as paiement”. or is there something really fucked up about american working laws i don’t know about ?
This reminds me of my father-in-law (Jack), he ran a coach tour business. The Tax office (here in the UK known as “HM Revenue and Customs”) brought in a new complex set of taxes rules around coach tours and travel, but my father-in-law sat down, studied them in detail and got to understand them (I’m not saying he was as intelligent as Sheldon, but he would go through things until he understood them). When the tax man looked over Jack’s accounts he couldn’t figure out this one section – which was the new tax rules. Jack explained it to him in easy terms, and the tax man was satisfied. A couple of weeks later he got a call from the same tax man asking if Jack would go into the tax office and explain to other tax officers how the new tax rules worked! He even got paid for his time.
The funny thing is, apparently actual IRS audits are exceptionally dull/not at all a battle of wits. It’s purely a matter of do you have the documentation for the return you filed. If not, you might owe more money. If so, well, nothing really happens, other than a large time drain for you. My dad does taxes for a living (and yeah, accepts payments that aren’t simply model trains, but actual currency). He’s obviously licensed, and his big thing is essentially that he’ll do your taxes for the same cost as other tax preparation services, but because he’s an attorney, he can actually represent you in court if things go sideways. So instead of having to find an attorney to help after being threatened by an IRS audit, well, my dad automatically has you covered. As he says, he can represent you all the way to the Supreme Court, at least in theory (though realistically there’s likely no actual tax issue that’s gonna go all the way to the Supreme Court)
I expected the counter argument to hinge on the ‘payment’ being theoretical and not yet realized. I think this was a good opportunity for Sheldon’s dad to step in and say; ‘I would have bought you the train anyway for being a good sport’ Suggesting the train wasn’t conditional, and demonstrating that he wasn’t a complete dimwit
I don’t think the Tax Auditor was going to actually go through with the whole, “so you’re a paid worker” argument. I think he realized Sheldon was a great opponent and he wanted to see how far the two could get. It’s not often tax auditors get to have a challenge that isn’t someone who has no clue what they’re doing. He probably only said it to try and prove that he was the smarter of the two. My evidence for this is the only time he frowns at Sheldon’s knowledge is when they’re playing the chess game, which is very clearly in Sheldon’s head. And Sheldon, having a superiority complex, of course would visualize his enemy being upset at their defeat. Also note that, whenever they are in the office, the auditor is smiling at Sheldon. It’s not huge, but it’s there.
As an unemancipated minor living at home within his family, he is not a separate legal entity. His work on the taxes would be no different than helping on the family farm. Also, if he is being treated as a separate legal business entity doing a client’s taxes, why didn’t the agent bring up credentialing beforehand. It’s unlikely that Sheldon signed the returns as the official preparer as he was doing them for his father and was just authorized to discuss them with the IRS.
My brother had a small business. After getting audited 2 years in row he sandbagged some deductions, When they got down to you owe. He pulled out more receipts. Oh I forgot to add these. Good thing you are here to verify them. Next year. No audit. He sandbagged again just in case. But not as much. Never got audited again. But next year they will be back. Back to suck up as much as possible from small business. The only ten year plan Congress seems to able to come up with.
something interesting about young sheldon is that he wears clothes that are meant for older people like a bowtie or polo shirts but with adult sheldon~ he always wears 2 shirts that have some superhero logo thats supposed to be kids~~ still wondering what shift happened for that to happen~ or maybe its just that all kids wanna be grownups and adults wanna go back to being kids type of thing.
I have never watched this article before but in the 1st part he describes Chess,and my father taught me chess versus checkers, Chess is a thinking game,and here at 42nd Street, I have watched people playing Chess,and if you can get your opponent in 4 moves CHECK MATE,you have won and on 14th Street they also play Chess,and sometimes they do bet,but NYPD does nothing because they are perusal to,as my brother would gamble playing Chess,and he was a pool Shark,running the pool table,and people didn’t want to play him because he would take there money and he also bowled for money but I was never as good as him. And I remember years ago when I watched two kid’s playing for the Chess Championships and it was very impressive and interesting to watch there reactions to the game, but at there age was even more impressive as it takes great skill to predict the next move and anticipate your opponents next move
I am reminded of a Reddit story where the hero ducks with the NY branch of IRS. Seems if you or anyone on your behalf stop a check, the IRS, NY will fine you $ 40 even if the stop payment was for a good cause (like OP and granddad both submitting checks to settle OP’s dues and granddad stopping his check to prevent double payment) So OP finds out the name, address, SSN, IRS details of his IRS case officer and submits many $ 10 checks to IRS in his name and then tells his bank to “stop payment” Promptly he gets a letter from the IRS, NY telling him they have waived the fine and PLEASE stop ducking with our officer!
Because it’s being discussed in the comments: You do not have to be licensed to prepare tax returns for pay. A CPA license is only required to sign an audit report which is unrelated to a tax return. The show script writers aren’t tax experts, they just need a slight gotcha. This is basically a mental McGuffin
