Does Child Need Passport For Bahamas Cruise?

The Bahamas cruise requirements for U.S. citizens depend on the type of cruise they are taking, but in most cases, no passport is needed as most cruises depart from the U.S. and head towards the Bahamas on closed-loops. Non-U.S. citizens can stay and play for up to three months without a passport and proof of citizenship.

For children under 16, only a birth certificate is required. For non-closed-loop cruises, a passport is necessary for foreign entry and departure. Children entering or re-entering the U.S. by air are required to have a valid passport. For children traveling with only one adult, Holland America and Holland America International require a notarized copy of their birth certificate.

For U.S. citizens sailing round-trip cruises to the Bahamas from the U.S., a passport is recommended but not required. However, proof of U.S. citizenship is still required, which can take the form of an Alien Registration Card (Green Card) and a Valid National.

For children under 15, a birth certificate, Consular Report of Birth Abroad, or Certificate of Naturalization is enough. For non-closed-loop cruises, a passport is necessary. Foreign entry and departure may require a passport depending on the country.

All guests, including children, must be in possession of a passport valid for six months after the end of the sailing. Closed-loop cruises only require BC and DDL for everyone, except minors under 16. If you can do it, a passport is not required for a Bahamas cruise.

Do kids need a passport to go to Atlantis Bahamas?

Do you need a passport if you’re flying to The Bahamas?. Yes. U.S. citizens traveling to The Bahamas should have a passport book valid through departure with at least two available blank pages for stamps. No tourist visa is required for visits up to 90 days. You may also need to provide proof of your planned departure from The Bahamas, like a return flight ticket.

Is it safe to travel to The Bahamas?. The U.S. State Department lists a Level 2 safety advisory for travel to The Bahamas due to a slightly elevated risk of crime. Visitors should not resist robbery attempts or answer their hotel room door if they do not know who is outside.

The U.S. Department of State also warns that some activities, such as boat tours, are not consistently regulated. This means the tour may continue despite bad weather or may not be held to the highest maintenance standards. The advisory also warns against swimming alone no matter your age or skill level. If you plan to swim, look for local warnings and updates about the weather and water conditions such as rip tides or shark sightings.

Can kids go on a cruise without a passport?

  • Carnival cruises that visit islands in the French West Indies (Guadeloupe, Martinique, Saint Martin and Saint Barts) require a valid passport regardless of departure port.
  • Children under the age of 16 who are citizens of the U.S. or Canada are exempt from the passport requirement for land and sea border crossings. In lieu of a passport, children are able to use a U.S. state-issued original or certified copy of their birth certificate (hospital certificates are not acceptable) or a Consular Report of Birth Abroad, or a Certificate of Naturalization as proof of citizenship for entry into the U.S. by land or by sea. Children entering or re-entering the U.S. by air are required to have a valid passport.
  • A new, lower-cost alternative to the passport, called a passport card, is acceptable for entries into the U.S. by land or sea. The passport card is not acceptable for air travel.
  • Carnival requires passports for all voyages visiting Martinique and Guadeloupe.

Photocopies of required documentation are not acceptable in any circumstance.

Even though passports are not required at this time for U.S. citizens who sail on cruises to the above destinations that begin and end in the same U.S. port, we strongly recommend that all cruise passengers travel with a valid passport anyway. This is because guests who need to fly to or from the U.S. unexpectedly during their cruise will likely experience significant delays and complications related to booking airline tickets and entering the U.S. if they do not have a valid passport with them. For example, a passenger missing a cruise departure due to a late inbound flight to Miami would need a passport to fly to meet the ship at the next port. Similarly, guests needing to fly to or through the U.S. before their cruise ends because of medical, family, personal or business emergencies, missing a ship’s departure from a port of call, or a mechanical problem of some sort with the ship, would need a passport. Of course, situations like these are rare, but they can happen.

Do you need a passport for a cruise to the Caribbean?

More often than not, the answer is no. U.S. citizens don’t need a passport if the cruise starts and ends in the same U.S. city. This is known as a “closed-loop” cruise.

That said, some may require a passport if you want to disembark at ports in any Caribbean destination. And if you’re starting and ending your cruise at different ports within the U.S. — or flying in to or out of a Caribbean country — you will need a passport.

However, while many cruise lines may not require passengers to bring their passports, plenty recommend it, as does the U.S. Department of State. It can come in handy if you need an emergency medical evacuation or the ship has to schedule an emergency docking at a different port that’s not on your itinerary.

So if you already have a passport, pack it anyway. However, it doesn’t hurt to apply for one if you don’t have one yet and have the time and funds.

Do children need a passport to go on a Disney cruise to the Bahamas?

Cruises to Castaway Cay and the Bahamas on Disney Cruise Line are usually closed-loop cruises, leaving from and returning to the same US port. For these cruises, you will need to have valid travel documents, which include a passport or a birth certificate and a government-issued photo identification card.

Cruises toCastaway Cayand the Bahamas on Disney Cruise Line are usually closed-loop cruises, leaving from and returning to the same US port. For these cruises, you will need to have validtravel documents, which include a passport or a birth certificate and a government-issued photo identification card. Children 15 and younger are only required to have proof of citizenship, not additional photo identification. These policies are set by the US State Department so make sure to check their website (link is available on the travel documents page) just to be sure.

Although a passport may not be required for your cruise, there are severalbenefits of cruising with a passport. The main one for me is simply if something unfortunate happens during our cruise and we need to fly home. Since we would not be coming back through the port, a passport could be required to re-enter the country. It is just peace of mind.

A few tips on documentation: pictures of your passport, birth certificate and/or photo identification are submitted electronically as part of your check-in around a month before your cruise. Take pictures and have these handy as you begin the check-in process. Once you have taken these pictures, set your forms of citizenship documentation to the side, with your luggage tags, so you have them handy when it is time to pack. When you hop in the car to leave your house and head to the airport or highway, double-check (triple-check) to make sure you have these with you. If you forget a toothbrush, they are easy enough to replace, but you cannot board without your travel documents, and they cannot be easily replaced last minute.

Can a minor go on a cruise with another family?

Adults who are not the parent or legal guardian of a minor traveling with them must present an original, notarized letter signed by the child’s parent(s) authorizing the adult to take the child on the specific cruise, supervise the child, and allow emergency medical treatment to be administered, if needed. This is necessary even when the adult traveling is part of the child’s extended family (i.e. aunts, uncles, grandparents, etc). To make it easy for you, we have a sample letter you can use. The letter can be downloaded here.

Can I use my birth certificate to go to the Bahamas on a cruise?

Though most foreign travel requires that you have a valid passport to come back home, cruising makes it easier to enjoy your vacation without worrying about this paperwork. If you are a US citizen, you can take a “closed-loop cruise” (one that begins and ends at the same port) to The Bahamas without a passport. Instead, you’ll need to present another proof of citizenship such as a birth certificate and a government-issued photo ID.

Of course, if you have a valid passport, you are welcome to use it on your cruise as well.

Whether you’re traveling solo, as a couple, with your family or with a group of friends, you’re sure to find the perfect port of call in The Bahamas:
