Do You Need A Snorkel For The High Country?

A snorkel is a crucial component for off-roading vehicles, especially those planning to traverse creeks, streams, or deep water. It raises the air intake on the vehicle, allowing it to operate more efficiently. In most cases, the snorkel is raised above the hood and just below the roof, enabling the truck to navigate through rough terrain without flooding the engine.

There are several reasons why a snorkel is essential for off-road vehicles. First, it raises the point of entry for air higher, preventing high density dust from entering the air system. Second, a snorkel provides protection for the four-wheel drive engine, providing cooler, cleaner air input, safer water crossings, and increased airflow for improved performance.

Snorkels are also beneficial for overland vehicles, as they provide a safe wading depth for the vehicle. However, if you don’t have a snorkel, you may need to be more cautious and wear a water bra or tarpaulin when water levels are low. Standard 4X4 air intakes are waist-high, while snorkels are near the chrome on the dome.

Another advantage of having a snorkel is that it allows for cooler air to be drawn in from higher up (off the road) and away from the engine. This is particularly important when driving long distances in deserts or when there is no opportunity to clean out the air.

In summary, a snorkel is essential for off-roading vehicles, as it raises the air intake and prevents high density dust from entering the air system. It also offers several benefits, including cooler, cleaner air input, safer water crossings, and increased airflow for improved performance. However, the choice between a snorkel and other accessories depends on the specific needs of the vehicle and the terrain.

  • My 2020 1500 LTZ has all of those features except the digital display (I have real dials) and the no seat belt/no shifting feature. The second one would be a pain when we are doing field work and I have to move equipment around. As it is, I have to remind myself to buckle up when I leave to go to town or home lol.

  • I would literally pay extra money to have all these new automatic features permanently deleted from my 23 Sierra.. Auto stop, auto ebrake, rear seat reminder, incessant honking and dinging for everything… Rear seat reminder.. loool k yup my pile of work receipts, dirty clothes and McDonalds wrappers are still there Sierra please stop judging me thanks
