However, there is no free Wi-Fi on most cruises unless you pay for a package that includes it (usually more than the standard fare).

Access to cruisecritic.com and ncl.com is free with the onboard Wi-Fi, but it is often at an additional charge. Some cruise lines include a certain amount of WiFi usage onboard. Do you get free Wi-Fi on cruise ships?

Most cruise lines these days have options for onboard internet, but you’ll need to pay for access, and not all types of internet service are equal.

When you book a cruise, you’ll generally be given the opportunity to purchase Wi-Fi before boarding. Doing so can save you money versus buying on board. However, it’s difficult to tell how good the connection will be before you arrive.

Cruise lines have been hard at work improving their Wi-Fi offerings. This is great news, as options in the past were both slow and spotty. Depending on who you’re sailing with, you can now find speeds that’ll support streaming, video calls and more.

It’s not all good news, though. The race to improve connectivity is a marathon, not a sprint.

The best way to use your cell phone on a cruise is to turn your phone onto airplane mode and use the apps with Wi-Fi to avoid incurring roaming charges (which can sometimes be costly.) When you are at port you can connect to local roaming networks. Check your provider’s international plans and rates for each port you plan to visit on your itinerary. It is strongly recommended to turn off cellular data and roaming while cruising, and instead use local Wi-Fi in your port of call.

There is a variety of options to purchase Wi-Fi for the duration of your cruise. Keep in mind that most cruise lines charge by device per day and base the price on which tier you need. Purchase your internet plan prior to boarding the ship for a cheaper rate.

Is it cheaper to buy Wi-Fi before a cruise?

There is a variety of options to purchase Wi-Fi for the duration of your cruise. Keep in mind that most cruise lines charge by device per day and base the price on which tier you need. Purchase your internet plan prior to boarding the ship for a cheaper rate.

  • Social Plan: AccessFacebook, Twitter, Instagram, Pinterest, Linkedin, Facebook Messenger, Whatsapp, SnapChat and the most popular airline sites. Does not include access to most other websites or apps. The cost is starting at $15.30 per person/per day.

Can I use my cell phone on a cruise?

Yes, you can still use all of your regular cell phone apps while on a cruise. Bear in mind that if the app requires data—such as social media or news feed apps—you will need to be connected to either your own or the ship’s Wi-Fi to use it.

Apps that do not require data, such as some games and podcasts that you have already downloaded, won’t require you to be connected to Wi-Fi.

One of the most commonly used phone apps is, of course, the camera. You can use your cell phone’s camera function on a cruise to capture romantic dinners and scenes of gorgeous beaches.

Is it worth getting Wi-Fi on a cruise?

Getting WiFi on a cruise can be worth it if you need to stay connected. It lets you communicate, access information, and share moments with family and friends. However, it can be expensive and might not be as fast or reliable as on land. Consider your needs and the cost before deciding.

Do cruise ships charge for Wi-Fi?

Before departure, you’ll receive an option to pre-pay for Wi-Fi for the entirety of your cruise. This not only gives you the best price on a per-device and per-day basis, but ensures you can get connected the moment you are onboard the ship.

Since all Royal Caribbean Wi-Fi is satellite-powered, you don’t need to worry about service disruptions based on sailing location. Geographically speaking, this means that Wi-Fi should work everywhere in the world, whether you’re hundreds of miles from shore or about to dock at a port of call. While there are certain parts of the globe where satellite transmissions are blocked for security reasons or are weak due to magnetism (such as more remote parts of the polar regions), most cruise ships don’t sail in these waters. Likewise, while weather conditions can weaken satellite signals, these disruptions tend to be fleeting.

If you’re sailing to Perfect Day at CocoCay®, you’ll be happy to know that Wi-Fi works there, whether you’re laying out in a lounge chair by the pool at Oasis Lagoon®, holding you’re toddler’s hand as they walk the plank at Captain Jill’s Galleon℠ or waiting in line for a waterslide at Thrill Waterpark®. Perfect Day at CocoCay is in The Bahamas, so your cell service will work there, too, though your carrier might charge you roaming fees depending on your plan.

This raises another question: If you don’t use Royal Caribbean Wi-Fi, can you still access the internet on your cruise through your cell service provider? The answer — and the cost — depends on your carrier, so it’s worth reaching out to them before your trip to get rates. Most cell plans offer international data roaming, some for free and others at a per-day cost. Keep in mind that speeds and coverage in these cases can be variable, and some services (such as mobile hotspot tethering) might not always be available. If you absolutely must stay connected, it’s a good idea to purchase a Wi-Fi package.

Does the Norwegian cruise have Wi-Fi?

Q – Can I use my wireless device onboard? A – Yes, you may use your personal or company issued wireless device whilst onboard. Wireless internet is available throughout NCL’s entire fleet. Simply open your settings and connect to the ships’ Wi-Fi. You will be directed to our login page once your internet browser is opened, but if not, please visit loginnow.com. Use the Logout button to save your minutes if you have a minute plan. You can return to this window at any time by visiting loginnow.com in your browser. For unlimited plans, logging out is not necessary. If you are planning to utilise VPN access whilst onboard, be sure to discuss your VPN limitations with your company’s IT department if you are planning to work whilst sailing. We are not able to change your settings onboard.

Q – Is the speed of my connection the same as on land?A – No, the data for onboard connection is transmitted via a slower wireless signal to satellites orbiting the earth approximately 22,000 miles from the earth’s surface and then bounce back down to the land-based exchange. At home, your data is sent through a fast cable connection to your local exchange, just around the corner from your house. Therefore, internet access onboard is significantly slower than high-speed connections normally experienced on land. We are in the process of updating our fleet with Starlink, the fastest internet at sea and are constantly working on finding ways to improve your internet experience onboard.

Q – Can I access video streaming and conferencing onboard?A – Yes, you access streaming with our Premium Wi-Fi plans.
