Hurricane-force winds fueled wildfire flames that destroyed a Lahaina bar owned by two former California residents. The fire tore through Lahaina this week, killing at least 67 people, and much of the small, historic town was cut off for days from the rest of the Hawaiian islands. The town of Lahaina on the island of Maui suffered widespread damage, and historical landmarks were destroyed. Eyewitnesses described an apocalyptic scene Tuesday in Lahaina town, where residents were forced to jump into the harbor waters to avoid fast-moving flames. The Kaanapali Beach Club, a major resort on the ocean about 10 miles north of downtown Lahaina, survived the fires but was closed to new arrivals and not accepting reservations. Some of the towns most iconic and historic landmarks all burned down, including the Pioneer Inn and Lahaina’s famous banyan tree.
Aerial video shows the town of Lahaina having suffered significant damage, including the Lahaina Yacht Club on Front Street. A pilot from Air Maui Helicopters flew over Lahaina Wednesday morning and recalled seeing hundreds of homes burnt down. The historic Lahaina Yacht Club was one of the last buildings to burn as the fire reached Front Street and the ocean. The clubhouse and most of the northern part of the community was completely burned.
In the wake of the death and destruction due to wildfires in Maui, aerial video shows the town of Lahaina having suffered significant damage. The Lahaina Yacht Club is committed to promoting yacht racing and cruising, and donations can be made to the Fire Rebuild Fund.
