Can You Snorkel Shore Reefs In Anguilla?

Anguilla is a small island in the northern Lesser Antilles, known for its good snorkeling on its main islands and offshore cays and reefs. The island offers warm, clear waters and shallow reefs, making it an ideal spot for novice and intermediate snorkelers. However, the reefs are less vibrant and the aquatic life is not as rich as at other locations.

One of the most popular beaches in Anguilla is Shoal Bay East, located on the lee side of the island where the water is usually calm enough for good snorkeling. The best reef is just to the right of Elodias, offering a unique opportunity to explore the diverse marine ecosystem of the Caribbean. Visitors can expect to see schools of eels, manta rays, colorful tropical fish, and lionfish.

The best time to visit for optimal snorkeling conditions is during the off-season when the water is calm enough for good snorkeling. There are many active and beautiful reefs in Anguilla, with the maze of coral directly in front of Manoah and SBV being particularly good for fish sightings. For healthy reefs filled with sea fans, there are some decent snorkeling spots at Little Bay, which is accessible but not as good as the beach at Shoal Bay East.

To enjoy snorkeling in Anguilla, it is essential to choose the right time of year and select snorkeling-friendly accommodations. Shore snorkeling from beaches like Shoal Bay in Anguilla is not exceptional unless you are willing to swim a long way out to the barrier. You can snorkel from shore at Upper Shoal Bay and Junks Hole, or take a boat out to Little Bay.
