Can You Get Arrested For Dumpster Diving At Ulta?

Dumpster diving at Ulta is not illegal, but it involves certain legal considerations, such as whether the store is considered private property and if there are visible No Trespassing signs. In 2017, a woman in California was arrested for dumpster diving. However, it is not explicitly illegal, but it requires careful planning and safety measures.

A TikToker recorded herself dumpster diving outside an unidentified Ulta Beauty store last week, claiming to have snagged eye pencils and perfume bottles. The only time dumpster diving would be considered entirely illegal is if law enforcement could prove that the divers were going through trash bags. A comprehensive state-by-state guide can help discover which states allow this unique practice and learn how to start your dumpster diving quest at Ulta.

Health and safety are a top priority for Ulta Beauty, and they strongly discourage the unsafe and sometimes illegal practice of dumpster diving. If someone dives for themselves, it is fine since they are responsible for their own risks. However, most divers who go to a store do not get arrested for the sake of journalism.

In Canada, it is not a crime to go through garbage, and you can only get arrested for dumpster diving if you trespass on private property or open a locked dumpster otherwise, dumpster diving is legal.

  • I was so disturbed after finding out that ULTA will destroy products instead of donating them. Dumpster diving is great but when they purposefully damage products to prevent dumpster diving that is an issue with me. I tweeted them and was told they would make sure the right department would get the message. I encourage you all to do the same. If you want to see mine my twitter is @callibyrd

  • Also, you do not want to use any kind of lip products with wands in them or mascaras because even though there are disposable wands everywhere a lot of people just apply it straight to their eyes or lips and it just becomes a breeding ground for nastiness. Not worth it to get mouth herpes or eye infections for some “free” makeup.

  • Ok girls, i have been diving for almost a year. and if you call the police in your town or the town you want to dive in. and they say its legal to dumpster dive you can. you just have to worry about employees comeing out and telling you to leave. so if you go at night you should be fine. the cop was trying to scare you.

  • Im wondering if that jump suit gave them away. It was bright if I was a cop patrolling I would have spotted you from a mile away. For what those go for you guys def got your pay even for a couple items. I wish they didn’t destroy their stuff nor this type of activity as looked down upon. I have never dived but definitely curious about it hehe

  • Also you can salvage open foundations and stuff. They don’t dump all of them out. I have so many and you can also save lip glosses and stuff. Clorox wipes are amazing! I’m so sad Ulta is an hour and a half away from where we just moved 🙁 lol but we hit Sally beauty and Bath and Body around here and score pretty good lol

  • It’s not possible to get arrested for dumpster diving. It doesn’t even make sense to say that. You can get arrested for tresspassing, but never for dumpster diving because dumpster diving is completely legal. Dumpster diving in the public domain was made legal by the supreme court of the USA 30 years ago and is legal in the entire country.

  • I always leave the areas around dumpsters clean cause making a mess ruins it for every one. Been caught once by cops and once by a store manager and both times told them I am recycling. No problem. But once I was getting a box and as I was leaving got yelled at by the manager. She wanted that box back! I have only 3 or 4 dumpsters close enough to get to but I keep track of when they are emptied and check them every day in the afternoon. around here the cops think you are up to no good if you are there at night.

  • I work at ulta and we purposely mess up the makeup because we are asked to by the brands. So it’s not really our fault because we are asked and it’s the rules. Sorry if that disappoints you but if you really think about it, it’s high end products so don’t expect perfect good make up if you do find any

  • Many of the tester lipsticks with a tester sticker may have been used only once, the color was not liked so not used or swatched once or twice, what I have done to those lipsticks is get a sharp knife and carefully cut off the used portion then clean with rubbing alcohol, some of those lipsticks they throw out are NOT used they are new items that that are not selling, they get a lot of New items they can’t afford to have slot of old stock that’s not doing well, also on mascaras customers use disposable mascara wands not the wand that comes with actual product

  • DON’T SAY THE NAME OF THE STORE PEOPLE!! Owners don’t like divers getting things for free and bringing down their profit if they realize what your doing they will make it impossible to dive for instance destroying product or locking the dumpster ( youtubers are going to ruin dumpster diving if they keep this up)

  • omg listen i dumpster dive and 99% of the time the tops are off of the products. we have a bowl filled with dawn soap and water to soak the tops sometimes we wash them in a net bag and we clean out the lip glosses with q tips. testers do not touch people’s lips or etc. They use little throw away applicators. I hope y’all didn’t throw away those lip sticks. I am very successful at dumpster diving. Please write me for advice.

  • That is so stupid that they mess the testers up like that (even though they have been used a lot and have been damaged a bit themselves) …. they really should just give the testers away to someone when they’re almost on their way out just so the world isn’t wasting anything, or wasting so much. Looking at the trash it’s so wasteful.

  • It is legal to dumpster dive on public property. However, the best dumpsters are at the shopping centers, which technically is private property and therefore the trash still belongs to the store. The police could hit you with theft but the only time these laws are enforced is when the police find evidence of other crimes, such as if you are attempting to harvest personal data for identity theft. There are also certain cities with their own prohibitions and there the police are directed to enforce.
