Gary, your articles are so helpful. Greece and the Greek Isles are on the top of my wishlist, and I think that when the time comes, my first cruise will be to this area of the world. I really enjoy all of your articles as I am a traveler who also appreciates art, history, culture, and local cuisines. And of course, your voice and presentation style are delightful! Thank you!
This month just been on a cruise in the Mediterranean with my wife, and casually it was our first cruise! We spent our vacations in Europe (France and Italy) and wanted to include a cruise. We went with Royal Caribbean Explorer of the Seas, started in Ravenna and visit Split and Dubrovnik in Croatia, and then Athens and Santorini in Greece. Originally the cruise included a stop in Mykonos but 2 months before the trip it changed to Athens, and for us it was perfect. In Split and Santorini we booked the excursions from the cruise, it was the best choice. In Athens we did self excursions, it was so much cheaper to take a bus to the center and visit the Acropolis on our own. And in Dubrovnik we booked excursions from other agencies. Being our first experience in a cruise we absolutely love it, and wanted to do it again soon. Thanks for giving so much information of your trips.
Hello Gary–I just discovered your delightful website yesterday. I’m planning a cruise to Italy, Malta, & the Greek Islands. If you include suggestions on where to shop in your articles, that would be beneficial, especially for expensive items. For instance, on a Caribbean cruise I took, the cruise director recommended “Touch of Gold,” as a good place for jewelry in San Juan, Puerto Rico. I purchased a bracelet there, which is my favorite. An example, would be to mention a glass place in Venice that you could direct your viewers to that would be appreciated. Also, a good place to have a snack or meal while in port would be helpful, in particular for long port times of 8-12 hours. We have to know where the safe places are to eat, otherwise having an upset stomach could ruin our cruise. THANK YOU FOR THE GREAT INFORMATION YOU PROVIDE–GREAT website.
we’re going Athens round trip in early October.we are supposed to have about 3 days in Israel. Plus Crete is on the itinerary. We are going with Holland America for the first time as I liked their itinerary best. We usually sail with Oceania or Viking. I was wondering what the weather will be like then. We’ve been to Athens, Santorini, Kusadasi and Rhodes before, but this also goes to Cyprus. I hope we will like Holland America, we have been very spoiled before. I booked a Vista suite on deck 7.
