Can You Canoe Down The Northeast Cape Fear River?

This kayaking guide provides essential information for a memorable kayaking adventure in the Cape Fear River Region. The river offers both calm stretches perfect for leisurely paddling and more challenging sections with rapids. Selecting the right kayak depends on your skill level and river conditions. For calm stretches, a recreational kayak is recommended.

The Cape Fear River offers stunning scenery and diverse water types. Canoes can shoot to an average of 2.5-3mph, taking 8-10 hours per day. Additional breaks and lunch time are also included. Kayaking along the lower Cape Fear River can provide surprises, such as Raven Rock, named after ravens roosting.

There are several places to rent canoes and kayaks at Cape Fear River. A guided kayak tour can make exploring the area easier or as scenic as possible. The journey launches on April 7th from a muddy spot on the Haw River, a quarter-mile below B. Everett Jordan Dam in Chatham County.

Canoeing along the Cape Fear River is a popular activity, with the mouth of the river at Southport creating the Cape Fear Inlet. Paddling from Buckhorn Dam to Lillington is a short trip, but paddling the entire river from Lillington to Wilmington is an incredible 146-mile journey.

CAUTION: River conditions and currents vary according to weather and season, making canoeing challenging, especially near Wilmington and points.

I am a school teacher who was bitten by the travel bug many decades ago. My husband Billy has come along for the ride and now shares my dream to travel the world with our three children. The kids Pollyanna, 13, Cooper, 12 and Tommy 9 are in love with plane trips (thank goodness) and discovering new places, experiences and of course Disneyland.
