Breathing underwater along the surface of water is possible with a snorkel, a tube attached to your mouth that loops around past your face, pointing upwards to the surface. This allows you access to fresh air and should only be used when the snorkel’s top remains above the water’s surface. However, if the top submerges, water can enter the snorkel.
A well-fitted mask and fins are essential for comfortable and efficient underwater breathing. Snorkels do not allow deep underwater breathing, but they do allow you to exchange air at the surface. To breathe underwater with a snorkel, adjust your breathing to inhale extra slowly and deeply, as you need to inhale over the water at the bottom of the snorkel loop.
People commonly use the snorkel to look under the water for prolonged periods, but when coming back up, you need to breathe deeply. Snorkels do not allow you to breathe while fully submerged in the water, so it is generally not recommended to dive underwater for more than 2 minutes with a full face snorkel. Even experienced snorkelers should practice deep breathing to acquire enough oxygen during snorkeling.
In summary, snorkels are a simple piece of equipment that allows you to breathe underwater, but they do not allow you to breathe deep underwater. To ensure comfortable and efficient underwater breathing, practice deep breathing and avoid lifting your head out of the water.

📹 Can You Breathe Underwater With a Full Face Snorkel Mask?
Hey snorkel enthusiasts, I get a lot of questions from people who want to know how breathing works on a full face snorkel mask.
I think a lot of people are confused —the full face snorkel mask has a lot of space over your face; therefore, when you’re underwater and you’re holding your breath, you can take a few sips of air and you can be underwater longer than you would if you were using a regular snorkel mask. The tube will do its job not letting water in when you do try to breathe. Like what she said, it won’t turn you into a mermaid but it will help you dive underwater longer. If you’re diving underwater, still think of it as a snorkel mask but with just a few extra breaths.
The answer to “can I breathe underwater in a full-face mask” should be a resounding NO – to avoid confusing beginners. I have met at least a few who think that full-face masks provide that kind of superpower – and at least two who choked while testing the hypothesis. In short – you can breathe only if your snorkel is above the water. If it is under the water – you are rebreathing your own air. The air in the mask is not enough for a 1/4 of a single inhale and does not prolong your time underwater in any meaningful way. Assuming otherwise will cause you to pass out shortly and drown.
P.s. You forgot to mention that is is not intended for diving because you cannot counter pressure your nadsal passages and eustachian tubes. It’s good for snorkleing and maaaaybe 1-2 meters underwater, but more than that and the water pressure will make it uncomfortable for your face and painfull (posibly dangerous for your ears). Also due to the fact that it was more air than traditional masks it’s more buoiant tham traditional masks and you have to reaaly fight it when diving.
