Can I Go Snorkeling If I Can’T Swim Well?

Dr. Marcella Abunahman Pereira discusses the safety of snorkeling for non-swimmers, stating that with proper planning and preparation, they can safely experience this exciting watersport in many areas. Snorkeling can often be done closer to the shore or in open water, and with caution, safety equipment, and assistance, anyone can participate in snorkeling.

There is a misconception that individuals unable to swim cannot participate in snorkeling. While knowing how to swim is an added benefit, personal flotation devices (PFDs) are a game-changer for those who cannot swim. Life jackets or snorkeling vests provide buoyancy, making it easier to stay in the water.

Snorkeling is a surface sport that involves mostly floating and requires very little actual swimming. While diving doesn’t require a good swimmer, it does help, but it is certainly not necessary. There are three reasons why non-swimmers can still snorkel:

1. The biggest challenge is the challenge of swimming. However, snorkeling usually involves swimming, but you can always put on a mask and look underwater while standing up. You might see some fish that might be underwater.

2. LifeVests are safe for non-swimmers, especially if you are comfortable in the water. Snorkeling works best when you are floating calmly in the water.

In conclusion, snorkeling is a safe and enjoyable watersport for non-swimmers, as long as they know how to do it correctly and prepare ahead of time.
