Obtaining a license to drive a yacht is not just a legal requirement but also a commitment to safety, proficiency, and responsible seamanship. It requires mastery of maritime laws, navigation skills, and preparedness in handling emergencies. Since 2012, recreational boats with a power of up to 15 hp (11.03 KW) can be driven without a license. This means that piloting and driving the boat, cleaning the interior and general housekeeping duties, and supervising guests and crew members on board are all tasks that can be performed without a license.
However, it is not recommended for first-time boat owners or inexperienced individuals to pilot their own yacht. Captains often request a copy of their captain’s license from insurance companies, which often involves consent from the owner. It is also illegal to take a yacht out on the water without any sailing experience, unless accompanied by someone who knows the boat.
For those aged 12-15 years old, a boating safety course is required to operate a motorboat without adult supervision. For those aged 16-17 years old, a personal watercraft can be operated without adult supervision. Most yachts are uninspected vessels, and there is no manning scale. In the US, legally, you can operate any size yacht all by yourself, but the crew size depends on the country.
To sail around the world, a captain’s license is required, along with international accreditation through the Royal Yacht Association or International. In the US, no license is required, but getting an insurer to approve you is another matter entirely.

What is the 10% rule for yachts?
I’m sure most of us have heard of the “10% rule”: a boat costs about 10% of the purchase price to maintain per year. It’s usually said in the context of used boats, and it rings true to me. There’s another rule thrown around which suggests “2% of the price when new” is the rule.

What do we mean by “large capacity?” Most super yacht charters only accommodate a maximum of 12 guests overnight regardless of their size. How much does a yacht cost to run?
Let’s walk through a sample yacht and the yearly running costs with full transparency of a 10-million-dollar yacht. Your major costs will be yacht crew, dockage, fuel, and maintenance. Please understand everything is variable based on those decisions plus the age of your yacht.
Owners can expect to spend about 10-15% of the purchase price annually on operating and maintaining a yacht. That’s $1-1.5 million a year for a $10 million yacht. The bigger the boat, the more crew and salaries you need. There are also other crew costs, like medical and liability insurance, training, and uniforms.
When you are not exploring the world or sunning on the deck in St. Barts, the yacht needs a place to dock. Dockage costs vary depending on how big the boat is and how desirable the marina is. You can lease a dock monthly or purchase a dock.
Like most things, yachts get wear and tear — they require regular maintenance and repairs. Routine maintenance can cost roughly 2% of the boat value after the yacht’s first year, and around 7.5% of the boat’s value when the yacht is 10 years old. That is not including surveys and refits.
Why are yachts limited to 12 guests?
The design and equipment of most yachts are optimized for a maximum of 12 guests. This includes the availability of life jackets, lifeboats, and other essential safety gear. Exceeding this limit could risk the availability of these safety measures.
Maintaining this limit is also essential for both comfort and safety. The layout and design of yachts are intended to provide a comfortable and spacious environment for up to 12 guests. Overcrowding can lead to unsafe conditions, including difficulties in evacuation during emergencies.
Insurance and Liability. Insurance and liability considerations also play a significant role in the 12-guest limit. Insurance policies for yachts are often structured around this guest limitation. Carrying more than 12 guests can significantly increase insurance premiums, which will have an impact on the yacht chartering cost.
More guests mean a higher potential for accidents and injuries, increasing the yacht owner’s legal liability. By limiting the number of guests, yacht owners and charter companies can better manage these risks and ensure that they are providing a safe environment for all passengers.
Can anyone pilot a yacht?
To sail around the world, you will need a captains license!. You will need your international accreditation through the Royal Yacht Association or International Yacht Training if you wish to skipper a yacht or superyacht as a career.
International Certificate of Competence. If you plan to sail your yacht around the world, you’ll have to obtain an International Certificate of Competence (ICC). The ICC has been likened to an international driver’s license for boats.
If you have your sights set on the waters of Europe and the Mediterranean, you will need an ICC to do so legally. However, it is essential to note that the US and Canada have different international captain license requirements and do not recognise the International Certificate of Competence.
Can I sail my own yacht?
As for the actual sailing itself, there are no specific qualifications or licenses required in order to do so. However, it is always best practice to brush up on your skills and knowledge by taking a short course or reading up on the subject. This way you can ensure that both you and your boat are safe when out at sea.
Licensing and Registration Requirements. All boats used for recreation on UK waters must be registered with the Maritime and Coastguard Agency (MCA). This is a legal requirement and there are severe penalties for failing to register your boat. The MCA also offer a voluntary Small Ships Register which is suitable for pleasure craft up to 24 metres in length.
If your boat is over 7.5 metres long, you must obtain an International Certificate of Competence (ICC) or equivalent qualification before you can legally take charge of the vessel. The ICC is recognised by most European countries and helps to ensure that you have the minimum level of competence required to safely operate a vessel.
Can you drive your own super yacht?
These licences state the upper size limit of the yacht that the captain can take command of. For owners that want to skipper their own yacht, this can certainly be done if they hold the Master 200GT licence (or above), but generally we only see owners of sub-30 meter yachts wanting to enjoy driving, by manoeuvring the yachts in and out of marinas etc, but theyleave the captain to the day-to-day running of the yacht.
Should the owner invest the captain’s education? What kind of education would it be?. Great question! Ultimately yes. The captain is like the CEO of a business, and nobody ever knows everything. Whilst we would expect a captain to be able to safely drive and manoeuvre the yacht, they may not be trained on finances, charter taxes, commercial elements and regulations. Therefore, some short courses and educational upgrade courses, along with some high-level safety training such as additional firefighting, medical or emergency response related topics. These will only make the captain more experienced and competent.
What are the current market salaries according to the yacht range?. Before I answer this, I have to state that every yacht, captain and owner are different! Private yacht captains live a different life to charter captains, and if the captain lives close to where the yacht is based, then they can be at home often and they have a good work-life balance, and these factors all play an important part in what the salary package is, along with other employment benefits such as how much paid holiday time they get.
Can I buy a yacht and charter it?
Is Owning a Yacht for Charter Profitable?. Yes, owning a yacht for charter can be profitable but owning a yacht will rarely “pay for itself.” Chartering your yacht presents some unique benefits that can lead to opportunities to make a profit off of your investment in a myriad of ways, including offsetting the cost of owning a yacht, selling your yacht for a profit, and even making a profit (if you’re among the lucky few who have the know-how and the right vessel).

One of the greatest benefits of chartering your yacht is making some money from your investment when you’re not using it. It’s a simple way to offset the cost of something that would otherwise sit and cost money. It also gives you more to work with as far as keeping the yacht up to date.
Keep in mind, the service and maintenance of a yacht is expensive but also a primary factor in whether or not your yacht will continue to retain value or even exceed value. Since routine refittings and redesigns are often unavoidable and cost up to 10 percent of your yacht’s value each year, this option offers you the added benefit of maximizing profits as well as your enjoyment each time you decide to set sail on another vacation.
Can you operate a yacht without a crew?
Generally speaking, in the legislation of the vast majority of countries there are no requirements regarding crew for private vessels. Accordingly, in theory you can sail a yacht of any size alone.
Depending on the country, you may need a captain’s license to operate your boat, but the crew size is up to you. On small yachts, the role of the crew is often played by the family or friends of the boat owner. Please note that we are talking exclusively about private yachts and not used for charter. In the commercial version, different rules will apply.
However, there are at least two important factors that determine the size of the boat you can handle yourself.
The first is the insurance company. Your previous experience of owning and cruising alone on motor yachts will be a determining factor in obtaining insurance, but there are still reasonable limits on the length of the boat beyond which the insurance contract will require you to have a certain number of crew on board, regardless of your qualifications. On average, it seems that this length is somewhere around 20 meters.
