Vacation packages offer convenience, cost savings, and added value to many travelers. They can be a great way to experience a new country or an affordable way to take a vacation, but they also have drawbacks. For those who value convenience and cost savings, a vacation package may be a good option. However, for those who value flexibility and personalized experiences, it may be better to book your trip independently.
Travel packages are available on various platforms like Expedia, airlines, hotel booking sites, credit card companies, and Costco. These packages can be quick to book and competitively priced, often including posh accommodations, ground transportation, and more. However, there are pros and cons to choosing a travel package, such as the need for planning and budgeting.
While traveling alone can seem less daunting, a package trip that allows you to cut loose and do your own thing can be both rewarding and easier. It is important to weigh your options, budget, and preferences before deciding how to plan a holiday.
Tour operators charge a fee which gets added to the price of a package, but in my opinion, they are more than worth their price tag. The amount of things you can see and do while on group tours is incredible.
In conclusion, the value of a vacation package depends on your individual travel needs and preferences. If you value convenience and cost savings, a package may be the best option for you. However, if you value flexibility and spontaneity, a package might not be the best fit for you.

Are package holidays any good?
Package holidays offer a convenient, hassle-free, and time-saving way to plan and book a holiday. The travel company will find the best holiday to suit your specific requirements, such as hiring a car, arranging transfers, or booking excursions. They will be the only company you need to contact for any changes before you go or require assistance while you’re away. Package deals can be cheaper than booking all the elements independently, as travel companies have access to discounts that are then passed on to you. In many cases, package deals can be exclusive to the travel company you’re booking with, so you won’t be able to book them anywhere else.
You get the holiday you paid for as the details of what you’re booking must be clear, accurate, and delivered to you as described. If your hotel is not up to the standard you were promised, your travel company will need to find a suitable alternative or make the necessary refunds. If you have any questions about package holidays, it’s recommended to speak with an ABTA Member for more information.
Is it cheaper to plan a trip with a travel agent?
Travel agents may not be the best fit for those with credit card points or airline miles, as they typically cannot help redeem them for trips they plan. Niche advisors can best advise on booking using points and miles or using your stash to book for you. However, they may not have the flexibility to make updates once reservations are locked in, as you may have put down a deposit.
An additional layer of communication is required for travel agents to plan a vacation, which can be time-consuming and may not fit into your budget. Travel agents can sometimes save you money, but some charge high fees or percentages of the total vacation cost.
Finding the right travel agent can be time-consuming, and DIY travel may be more convenient. Rewards may not be available for travel booked by an agent, but the merchant code for travel agents is often “travel”, meaning the travel agent fees paid through a qualifying rewards credit card could be eligible for bonus points if your card offers boosted rewards on the travel category.
Certain travel benefits still work for you even if a travel agent books your trip, such as lounge access if your credit card offers it regardless of who booked your airfare, airline, or class.

What is the disadvantage of using a travel agent?
A travel agent can facilitate cost savings and provide local expertise, but the associated costs may exceed those of other options. They assume responsibility for the myriad details inherent to the process, offer less flexibility in terms of the options available, and may require some degree of research on the part of the client. Nevertheless, they can circumvent unexpected charges and facilitate alterations to itineraries without the inconvenience of rebooking flights and accommodations.

What are the disadvantages of a package holiday?
Package holidays offer a flexible and budget-friendly option for travelers seeking a more personalized experience. They typically include flights, transfers, accommodation, and sometimes food. Historically, package holidays were popular in the 1970s, but their popularity declined in the early 21st century due to the rise of no-frills flights and comparison websites. However, recent years have seen a resurgence due to increased financial security and the rise of budget airlines that add hidden costs like baggage fees to fares.
This can make a great deal on a flight seem less cost-effective, as travelers may not appreciate the full-board meal plan and may not appreciate the local culinary options. Despite these drawbacks, package holidays continue to be a popular choice for those seeking a more personalized and affordable vacation experience.

Tour operators often offer reduced rates on packages by chartering their own planes and booking hotel rooms in bulk. Last-minute bookings can also find cheap deals by selling off remaining plane seats and hotel rooms. 📹 Is the Tokyo Disney Vacation Package Worth It?
Are you planning a trip to the Tokyo Disney Resort and wondering if the vacation package is worth it? In this video, I dive deep into …
We purchased a package for $899, plus $100 processing fee for a five day, four night stay at Vistana Villages. We would get a $500 gift card after the presentation. We were already going to be there for our regular stay. We ran into a problem when my husband was diagnosed with cancer right before we were scheduled to leave. It was really difficult to schedule another date, because we were not sure when his treatment would end. I scheduled it as far put as they would allow, but they are basically very unsympathetic to your problem.
Doing due diligence. Signed up for 3 night stay w Vacation VIP @ Westgate Resort LV. $99 + $18 tax/night, all other fees, parking included. Collect $100 Visa gift card after attending presentation. Fully aware of the game, no intention whatsoever of buying, esp after perusal this plus multiple other articles on these packages.

Thank you so much for this article! We are very new to the world of timeshares, but this letter I got from Sheraton Vacation Club seemed too good to be true, so I wanted to do some research. They’re offering 5 days/4 nights in a personal 1BR villa at Sheraton Vistana Villages for $269. It also says I’ll get 15,000 Marriott Bonvoy points (I have no idea what those are) OR a $100 gift card for the Planet Hollywood restaurant at Disney Springs (not sure if that’s my choice or theirs). It says I have to attend a sales presentation that is “approximately 90 minutes.” What do you think about this one, Jeremy?
Hi Jeremy- I purchased a timeshare package last week and have been perusal your articles since. My ? is since I am still in my 10 day window (ends today) I cannot get any information on how many points I need to book anything. I purchased specifically to go on a cruise. I purchased a minimum of points but was given an additional 3500 points for signing bonus. Do you have any articles or information where I can find out how many points it takes to go on a cruise, go to Hawaii or Aruba – destinations outside the US? I understand it takes alot of points to go on these types of vacays-I am just wondering if it would be better to just book direct – seems it would be less costly.
