Salons are small businesses, and sometimes things happen. And for you to be patient and kind and willing to give them a second chance to provide you with their services, is really kind.
When I lived in Texas I went to a Smartstyle in Walmart and was amazingly surprised. The young lady was excellent and help me transition to natural hair. I’ve been a stylist for over 20 years and i6 must say he did a good job. The only thing that concerned me was how many times he passed through her hair with the flatiron. I only usually one smooth swipe through each piece of hair and it’s bone straight. Excessive straightening is what causes heat damage no matter how much heat protectant you use. A great quality flatiron and consistent heat control will help minimize multiple passes through the hair for straightening.
It looks amazing and healthy. My sister owned her own salon before she passed and she was the only stylist I had for 20 years. I always get my hair done at chain salons. They’re literally held to a standard. My friends laugh at me however independent stylists are too expensive for hit or miss quality. I’m a lady but that along with their attitudes?! Nah I saw it leading to me hitting and not missing. Our dollars are earned and not to be taken for granted with poor and or non service. Plus, he washed and conditioned your hair beforehand, too. Most Black stylist wouldn’t even deal with you if you haven’t done that before you get there. Also, a trim would have been at least $5.00 more with one of us. So, this was a major success. I will definitely consider getting my hair done at Walmart in the future.

I worked for Smartstyle for about 7 years . I’ve been doing hair for 21+ years and yes a steamer is recommended as well as silk press shampoo and conditioner for silk press service. End trim is also recommended. My silk press service last for about 3to4 weeks. Looks like he did a good job. It’s not a silk press though he flatironed it.
10 years ago when I first went natural I was going to SmartStyle for my silk presses during my transition. There was a black woman working there and she always did a great job! One day I went the Caucasian woman there said she no longer worked there and they didn’t have anyone that could work with my hair 😢 Very sad that people can be licensed cosmetologists and not know how to do a variety of textures. The first and ONLY stylist I had for a minute was Nathan at a Smart Styles in Eastern Washington. He unfortunately moved on but not after helping me bring my hair back from a home kitchen scissor chop my mother did on me when I was 16 (bless her heart I just wanted the sparse ends gone) I was so impressed but so scared to let anyone else do any type of heat treatment on my hair for 10 years. The reason why I went to smart styles was the poor girl at Paul Mitchell told me she could do black hair, my type 3C/4A/4B hair was much different then the BIRACIAL black hair she was talking about. And unfortunately this was why my ends needed trimming. My point is Black hair education should be MANDATORY in cosmetology school. It makes no sense that someone is getting underpaid in walmart for knowing more about the most complex, yet most beautiful, hair on the planet while there are people working New York fashion week that don’t even know how to section any hair type beyond 3 🥴

I’m Dominican, born and raised. I have been 100% natural for 2 yrs. I have a mixture of 4C and 4B hair and is about 10 inches now. Last week I went to a Dominican hair salon near where I live in NYC to get a silk press. It’s been 2 plus years since the last time I got one. When I walked in, the owner looked at me as if I had came from another planet. Before she even started to wash my hair, she was pulling it really hard with her hands (I thought about walking out, but decided to stay). When she was untangling it, she was also pulling it hard from the roots all the way to the ends with a thin comb😡 I was sooo angry! I could hear all my hair breaking. Long story short, she charged me $45, and made ME feel as if she was doing ME some kind of favor. She was so unprofessional and ignorant about natural hair. And the funny thing is, right now about 90% of Dominican women living in the Dom. Rep. are 100% natural. There has been a significant change in my country when it comes to natural hair care. Dominican people who live in DR are becoming more and more educated about their natural hair. But unfortunately, there are still a lot of people in the hair industry (especially those who reside outside of the Dom. Rep.) who still consider natural hair to be “bad hair” and won’t even bother to get information about the beauty and diversity of it and on how to treat it correctly, abd that’s a shame! NEVER AGAIN!

My stylist did not use 2 flat irons lol 😂 I can assure you it was only 1 (the other tool in his hand was a comb 😉) 3.) Some felt it was too many passes (and that’s totally fine) but the multiple passes were done on my roots and not on the ends of my hair which of course or the oldest parts of our hair and more prone to damage. As a former professional hairstylist…I’d say, YOU lucked out with this stylist. Now as far as the dollar amount…YOU were very fortunate to receive a silk press for $65. He did a pretty good job. He’s dabbled in African American hair before, apparently. If I were you, I’d kept this place a secret. Unfortunately, others will get wind of this place and this salon will up its silk press prices to the average salon that does silk presses. By the way, your hair is beautifully textured. Your blowout looks so healthy. Pre-pandemic Smartsyle inside of Walmart was my favorite place to get my hair blown out. When I was transitioning to natural in 2011, the Smartsyle stylist charged me the standard blowout price of $17, which included the shampoo and condition. The stylist was a very sweet Latin young lady. They know better now that so many people are natural, 😂. They have changed up that whole price list, 😆.
I ALWAYS go to Smart Style to get my hair done! I’ve been a regular customer for well over 12 years. It is amazing for cuts, styles, and color. I met some of the BEST stylists here. Now, that I make more money, I hate going to high end salons. My Smart Style stylists do everything better. I had my hair damaged multiple times and spent $300+. I own my shop vs. renting a place or working for someone so prices will vary on things like that. Nonetheless, he did an amazing job.

I used to managed at a Smartstyle’s in Walmart these franchises are actually owned by Regis hair salon company not Walmart and it’s a good place for stylists trying to gain clientele it’s just depends on the stylist you get and their level of hair experience ❤but I would have so many issues with stylist being late and calling out I think the biggest problem was the stylist only got 30-40%of the service they do and being overwhelmed because of short stuff it was always a high turnover rate with employees

RESULTS VARY!! I took my nephew to get his hair cut at smartstyles at a Walmart and she did a horrible job. she didn’t get a clean close up shave to where he had patches of hair. You can tell that she wasn’t used to and or trained to cut black hair. Overall we left feeling defeated. I had to go and clean up what she couldn’t do.

I’ve had other races doing my hair for almost 30 years going back to JcPenny in college. It really is all in the hands of the stylist. You made the most of it by running to Costco for gas (see I would’ve gotten distracted by the delicious croissants) and missed the 2nd appointment booked!! 😂 My daughter wants a silk press and I have all of the products and that exact flat iron upstairs. Spanish hairstylist are great (seem like he was Spanish) because their Ethnic group has diverse hair textures so they are freaked out by it.

One, I love your hair (natural) your curls are so pretty & healthy Two, I feel you with the color…my hair is doing the same thing randomly. It’s so light right now my clip ins barely blend in anymore, it’s just been changing on its own. You had an appointment at 11:30 which is the only thing that annoyed me, like he shouldn’t have to “fit you in” with TWO whole appointments. You were so patient about it I really liked his style and techniques! How did you feel about the amount of heat from the blow dryer? It looked like a lot on camera But the blow dry with the bristle brush turned out really nice by itself I probably would have asked him to hit your ends with the straightener a bit more than he did in the article. He did multiple passes focusing on the top of your hair more and overlapped sections. I was in the phone like (okay babe thats enough🫳🏾) Overall, really niceeee! He was a great stylist

It becomes a ” To be continued ” episode trying to find other ethnic groups that have knowledge about our hair & what it entails to nourish + keep it at it’s best. There’s a website on Utube named “Beyond Hair TV”. The first time I watched it, I was put up on a lot of facts like ” You only need to go through the hair with a flat Iron one time ” any more & you run the risk if damaging it. This woman earthy and is knowledgeable.
I’m impressed next time use the Wow product you can purchase it at Sephora or check on line it’s a repellent from water you can’t be immersed in water it takes about a good month before your hair start to frizz up. You still have to wrap your hair, but it’s really good in humidity believe me try it!❤❤❤
I was a manager of a Smart Styles Salon. Smart Styles is not affiliated with Walmart, they just rent space inside and share clientele. The lady who you originally made an appointment with is not allowed to get clients’ info so she couldn’t call you to let you know what was going on. She seemed to have been the one to have to open the salon. However, the salon could get fined for not having the salon opened on time. The policy is we do not work on dirty hair. So to ensure the best outcome of the service, we’d shampoo the hair with our own products as we know they are salon quality products. We’d always use a heat protectant and offer to trim the hair. And the prices Smart Styles offer is way cheaper than any other place. It’s a very diverse salon and people sleep on them. They usually don’t do weaves due to the time frame it takes to do it but they do everything else.
The blow dry was great. Next time ask him to apply the heat protectant before the blow dry. And please don’t allow him to do that many passes with the flat iron. One slow pass will do the job. may not ruin your curls the first time but over time heat damage will occur. ❤❤ We have control over our hair.

We had Asians who’d come in for body waves (hence the perm rods) black women who came in for relaxers, white women for bleaching and highlights and we did everything and everyone. The men would come in for beards, manicures and hair cutting. 😮So imagine my surprise when we were at a Walmart’s garden center and she asked me to take her to the salon! I was shocked, but she went over and asked all kinds of question. The stylist that day was a beautiful Asian woman with long hair and she was blow drying a white woman’s hair. I believe stylists of today even white celebrity stylists should be trained and know how to do every hair type just as my Mom and her stylists did. ❤ I don’t recall Mom making an appointment. She’d recently suffered a stroke so she didn’t have use of her left hand. She was a magician. People came from all over, left Boston to come to her. Dad’s taken her to Walmart for hair appointments when I’m not visiting. I’m just amazed. She has 3B wavy hair, so I can blow dry it whenever I visit during the holidays. She directs me in how to color and cut it into her signature short chin length, longer in the front and sides and tapered at the back, and parted on the side.

I actually work for SmartStyle, I’m not sure why people think getting hair done in our salons isn’t as good as other salons. We actually don’t work for Walmart, we rent the space from Walmart which is smart business! We have access to hundreds of clients everyday just walking past our shop! This should give people more trust in us because we have lots of experience! Just because we are located in walmart we are not discounted stylist! At the Walmart in Texas I used to shop at there was a barber and stylist that stayed packed out at their salon. He drove a brand new S550 Benz and she drove a Range Rover. I started my natural hair journey in a Walmart. I had senior pictures the next day, and somebody recommended me to meet up with a braider (i didn’t have a car and the half way point was Walmart) I waited for 45 minutes the girl was a no show. I was CRYING in the Walmart parking lot lol i called my mom she was at work so i went inside and sat down at the salon. A wonderful black man consoled me and offered his services. When he asked me what i wanted i cried again and just said cut it all off. He told me what products to try, styles, and went in the store and bought me the cutest pearl headband. 7 years later, I’m so grateful for that Walmart salon 💕💕
She ate that right up! Honestly for services in Walmart, if the right person is there, it’s always a great experience! I loved your braids. Carmelia did a great job and I loveeee that y’all talked! That’s something I think so many stylists don’t do anymore, have legit convos while you’re getting your hair done. SN: I’ve been going to the Walmart Vision Center since I was a kid and the workers there are now friends with my Mom and I’m going to a bachelorette trip for one of them next month 😂💀
omg👀👀 might have to look up her stuff also YES let’s talk about that “tenderheaded” concept! for so long as a kid I HATED dealing with my hair because it hurt so much and I just got called “too sensitive” when I was in pain. grow up and realize actually, I love my hair texture, my mom was just tired and impatient and ripping my hair into submission lmao😭
I am happy this worked out. Last time I went to have my hair done at a Walmart(first, last, and only time) the lady cut my hair off. It was hanging on my back and she cut it to my chin. I wanted a layered or face frame cut in the front. I don’t know why she put scisors near the back. Did the same to my sister. We had matching farquaad cuts.
A stylist at Walmart saved my hair when it tangled so bad from postpartum shedding. I walked in with a huge bongo dread on my head. The first stylist I spoke to looked at me crazy and told me I was looking at getting a short cut, which kind of crushed me because my hair was way past bra length at the time. Another stylist came in after her main job working at an engine plant all day, and asked me why I wanted to cut my hair. I explained the situation and informed her of what the other stylist told me. This stylist told me there was no reason for a cut and she could detangle my hair. This lady literally stood there and gently and carefully untangled my hair for an hour. She then washed, deep conditioned and styled it. I left with my hair all pretty and flowing. She only charged me for the wash, condition and style. The salon had closed way before we were done and she felt me tipping her $50 was too much! I was very sad when that salon closed. This was in North Carolina.
I don’t comment much if at all because I like to silently lurk, but Lawd props to CK! The braid design is awf the chain gawjoush girl!!! She went off. She came to work not to play but to slay honey!!!! Also good on her as a stylist checking in on her client and also asking questions to make sure the client isn’t negatively affected by product, tightness, heat damage, etc. Awesome awesome awesome!
It’s the convenience & practicality for me. With the way these gas prices are set up, I couldn’t be mad at a 30 min. trip w/shopping. Esp. with the way your hair turned out & you had the opp to vibe with stylist? Uh, ah no ma’am. Whenever you want (because you have the skillz to diy) your hair braided you def better hit her up. #official 😘

People sleep on the Walmart salon. When I was a loose natural, I got my BEST blowouts at Walmart. One was done by another AA woman and I had a white Chick do it once and she was informed about black hair (she properly detangled, was gentle, used heat protectant, and worked that blow dryer like a Dominican without all the heat). I left there looking fresh 🤩.
Will!!! I work in one of those salons. The thing is these salons are not a part of walmart. We are not walmart employees. Ppl forget that and expect walmart quality performance but thats not the case at all! I will admit at mine i am the only one that really does natural hair tho but thats good for me cuz i get all the amazing clients 🤪..but anyways its about the stylist not the salon! And thats pretty much true with any salon you go to. I did hear tho that some places (sports clips i believe is one) have their stylists cut a specific way which doesnt fit for everyones needs so thats when you need to be careful
I used Walmart twice before. The first time it went super well. I was honestly surprised because it was a semi rural very white area. But the white hairstylist did a great job with my hair that had been minimally maintained since I was in training at the time. The second was horrible. The hairstylist was new to haircare overall but she was really sweet. Unfortunately, she still did a very bad job but I hoped her doing my hair for the first time gave her some experience with black hair. I offer her some tips during the time. She was middle eastern and was honest about how she had very little time to practice on curly hair during her schooling.
I worked in Smartstyle for almost 5 years. Fresh out of cosmetology school. It was an experience as a stylist there but I will say working at Smartstyle comes with a lot of negative connotations. But the biggest thing that a lot of people don’t understand is Smartstyle is NOT affiliated with Walmart. It’s just a situation where the company rents the space inside of the Walmart but it has nothing to do with the store. So people feel weird when coming in due to the fact of it’s location. But it’s literally like having a store front inside of a strip mall kind of situation. But they have a lot of amazing stylist in there (myself included when I did work there) once you get passed the location 👍🏽
But Walmart frequently just leases the space to either another company of salons or an independent salon owner who just leases the space from Walmart.. I think a company called SmartStyle leases a lot of the salon space in A lot of the Walmart but I know they closed the one near me and an independent barbershop leased the space after that. Those are generally not Walmart employees working in the salons in Walmart. They have banks, salons, ect in Walmart because companies lease the space due to the high volume of traffic of people in and out of Walmart. And She did a great job on your hair.
I don’t think tender headedness is a false concept at all. I’m neurodivergent and lots of neurodivergent folks have sensory issues. I don’t think I have sensory issues to the point where it would be considered a processing disorder, but I’m definitely tender headed. Part of it can be chalked up to stylists being too heavy handed, but I’ve done my hair myself for years and no matter how gentle I am the sensation (especially in the middle of my scalp) gets uncomfortable lol. I think tender headedness can be a useful tool to describe sensory sensitivity in context of haircare.
My stylist did this to me: A smarty style employee did this to my hair. She dismissed me for simply asking a question about technique and efficiency. Shes been doing me and my two girls hair for over a year and never had a problem until today. I left the salon looking like this. I asked her would it be easier for her to do feedin braids or the regular Braiding like the Alicia keys braids from early 2000s and she said “you don’t trust me. You offended me. I have to refuse to do your hair” My question offended her. She did this in front my 2 kids. I posted my link I shared to IG for a visual but I did complain immediately thru their website.
I have a confession to make. I have not been on your website lately but I subscribed long time ago. I will be back. You lk good. Your hair is marvelously. Some beautician needs take pointers from this young lady. She is not going be at walmart for a long time. Because she knows how to handle customers. People lk that.
