Well sitting in the woods to have a picnic, anyone should at least keep in mind for a possible bear encounter. Having bear spray and also a ultrasonic sound device will keep them away. It’s not good seeing that they weren’t in control of the bear rather the bear being in control of them in this situation
That was just a juvenile black bear. There are lots of black bears where I live, and I’ve never heard of any this bold. All we have to do to scare off a juvenile is stand up and make a lot of noise, and they bolt. They might break into a shed if it has food and there are no people around, but nothing like this. Also: Who was holding the camera? That person wasn’t staying still.
Contrary to all hysteria, black bears are not dangerous. Attacks are very, very rare; and typically only when an animal is sick or cornered. Really they are no more dangerous than any other animal in the woods. That bear only did what he did, because of how calm they were. He has probably been conditioned to not fear humans, exactly because of the guy filming him. Everyone wants a article these days, and typically they are willing to put out food as bait to get it. Camera + food = invitation to lunch for that bear. 😋
That bear should have never invaded a picnic birthday party like that, terrify a family and wolf down everything in a greedy way. But on the other hand. The bear looked very thin. Like it was wandering the woods for a good few weeks with a very empty belly and wasting away. So the food went to a good cause in helping that bear out
Before they went out to celebrate that B-Day meal… the mother & her friend (camera woman) practiced in the event of a bear showing up. They thought it was still too early for bears at that time… but practiced anyway. They would both act like statues with mom covering her sons eyes. She knew that any animal would scare him as dogs & cats do regularly. The boy has down syndrome. They were perfect in their execution of the plan. GOOD JOB, MOM & FRIEND! Happy B-Day, Santiago!
This strikes me as staged with a captive bear. Maybe Im wrong but the camera man moving around to perfectly capture the scene seems fishy. That said if this was a real situation this is not how to handle it. If that bear had turned agressive no one at that table was in a position to do anything other than be clobbered. They should have taken action to scare the bear as soon as it revealed itself. Especially such a young black bear, there is no way that bear would challenge 3-4 people yelling at it, it only looks to be about 150lbs. Doing as they did was highly risky and even though the outcome was fine, that bear now has learned it is totally acceptable to walk up and steal fold from humans.
Honestly, it was kind of stupid to just sit there and wait for the bear to finish eating. The bear wasn’t focused on them. It was focused on eating that food. So they could have easily left and the bear would have just kept eating. Once the bear finishes the food then it’s attention will go back to the humans so it was really stupid to wait for it to finish.
