Florida Keys

Once we had left the mainland USA, it did not take very long to fall in love with the Florida Keys.

The Keys are like stepping back in time to a simpler life and time.

The Drive

Driving the roads that link up all the Keys is part of the magic and thrill of this road trip.  We spent 4 hours driving from Miami all the way to Key West.  The water is a blue like you have never seen before and you will NEED to stop along the way to look at the ocean in awe.  The Seven Mile Bridge is worth the drive alone, just to drive over the amazing piece of engineering.

So put the windows down and enjoy this road trip.  There is only one way in and one way out so there is no needs for maps to guide you.

Stops along the way

The MUST DO along the Keys drive is stopping at Robbie’s on the Islamorada Key.  It is at Robbie’s that you get to feed the tarpon.  Pay for each person to go on the jetty and we also purchased two buckets of fish to feed the tarpons.  The pelicans on the jetty are huge and greedy so do not show them your fish bucket.  The tarpon are absolutely enormous and they are hungry!!  Lean over the jetty and wave the fish into the water and wait or the tarpon to grab the fish – WATCH your fingers!!!

There are so many restaurants to stop at along the way.  Our destination was Key West so we decided to stop about half way Marathon.  The Tiki bar restaurant was right on the water and the view was spectacular. The food was great too.

The Seven Mile Bridge is so spectacular and you are driving over ocean with nothing else to see.  It is simply breath taking and our children talk about this bridge still.

Key West

The most southerly point of the USA can be found at Key West.  We fell in love with the vibe and atmosphere of Key West.  The architecture and history that is on Key West is wonderful.key west 3

We stayed at an art deco hotel called El Patio which was so perfect.  The location was great as we could walk to a beach, a large playground, the southern most point and to restaurants.  Hotels can be expensive in Key West but we found this hotel very reasonable.  The rooms were large and we had a fridge and eating area.  It also had a pool at the hotel.

The Southern Most Point USA is a popular attraction and the wait is approximately 20mins to have a photo in front of the marker.

The Hop on Hop off Trolley Tours on offer in Key West are plentiful and competitive.  We chose the Old Town hop on hop off service as the children were free.  It had a stop within walking distance of the hotel so we used the trolley as transport around the island. The commentary was fun and informative.

Food on Key West

Is it possible to visit the Keys without trying Key Lime Pie??  We tested a few and different varieties.  We loved the Key Lime pie from Kermit’s. There were a few different locations to try a Kermits Key Lime pie.  We loved the frozen Key Lime pie on a stick dipped in chocolate!!key west 8

There are many different restaurants from high end to cheap and cheerful.  All the touristy places to eat and the bar scene is on Duval Street.  This isn’t our scene so we searched for a more family friendly authentic place.  We hit the jackpot when we stumbled across a family run Cuban restaurant – El Siboney.  The wait out the front was worth every minute.  Delicious food and family atmosphere made our night.
